How would a '95 Yamaha YZF-600 be for a first sportbike? How do these bikes compare to Honda CBR F3's or Kawasaki ZX-6's?

i had a 91 kawaii zx-6 for my first bike and all i have to say thank god i bought a used bike for my first year. nothing more painful than having a brand new bike when you do your first drop

These are a very nice bike. In the same league as the F3. Perhaps a tiny bit nicer than the ZX-6, which is about a 5 year older design.

Please remember. Just because it's from the "last generation" doesn't mean it's not bloody stupidly fast. I test rode the '96 version and it was oh so silky smooth and light handling. I also found myself cruising along in a residential area at what I thought was my usual 60 kph only to look down and find I was doing 80kph. It's that smooth.

And trust me. You don't need to think of this as being a stepping stone. It's a good enough bike that it's a keeper unless you find yourself trying to scrape your footpeg all the time in which case you should find a track bike. But as a real world ride you won't find many better. Corbin doesn't even list a replacement saddle for the 600R just becuase the stocker is so comfy. Toss some soft saddle bags on it and tour the Northwest and grin in the corners while you're doing it.

Can you tell I liked that bike yet?.......... :thumbup

Excellent real world motorcycle.

My friend had one.

- Good power
- Good handling
- Comfortable
- Neat looking
- A little heavy

It won't win you any trophies but whon gives a shit. it's a street bike right.

Just to comment on the little heavy item above. This is all relative. It may have been a few lbs more than it's competition and it's about 30 or so heavier than the current crop but it sure didn't feel like it through the handlebars.......

Hey, FGiS, did you get a chance to ride your bud's bike? Be interesting to hear what you thought of it.

If I didn't have a full on case of Liter Fever at the time I think I'd have bought one of these and not had a single regretful moment.

What do u think a decent '95 YZF600 would cost?

Well, I haven't been following the buy and sell much these days but here goes. Probably 5'ish at this point in the season. Certainly my common sense says 6G's would be too much unless it had under 10K km's on it.

But the market is SO seller these days with all the new riders that I hate to limit the prices to that.

If you can be patient and wait for mid August then 5000 should be doable if you can find another one.

TeeTee - Now I may be new to sportbiking and what not, but considering the amount of bikes I've already test ridden I'm starting to get a feel for the diffenences in bikes. So I test rode that '95 YZF 600 that I was talking about and man it WAS pretty damn SMOOTH.

Yeah I rode it TeeTee. Quite a bit actually.

Yes you are correct that the weight is respective and it is a little porkier in comparison to the direct competition...I however ride a ZX7 pig so I don't really care about weight :)

I thought the bike rode awesome. Many people slagged it but those comments were limited to the ignorant bandwagon retards who don't know shit beyond the spec sheets.

The overall balance of the bike for the money was really good I thought. The power was smooth and available. I had no problems throwing it around and the brakes felt great. It did feel a little heavy in slow speed corners however at the time I was used to my FZR 400 and was new to riding back then so....

I never go the chance to go on any long rides with it but from what my bud told me the comfort was respectively great for long distance rides. Passengers would also find it quite bearable on the back.

motorcycle.com had a great shootout about three years ago where they rated the YZF 600 the best out of the bunch as it was the best bike in the 600 class (at that time) for the real world.
