Has anyone here ever gotten a ticket for not having a light illuminating your license plate? I just put a fender eliminator on and someone told me you can get a ticket for this if you don't have a light on your plate. I'm just trying to decide if I should put some lighting device on my plate so I don't get a ticket or if it is really a non issue. Thanks.

Gord.

yes u can get a ticket but the probabilty a cop pulls u over because of the light is minimal.

I adjusted my licence plate on my 600rr...no light and sits flush with my undertail exhaust.. had many a cops behind me a stop lights etc... no ticket..

but like everything else... you catch a copper in a bad mood or whatever.. you'll get a ticket im sure!

I am not to sure of being pulled over for minimal lighting on your license plate, but you're interested in a quick fix, go to Lordco and ask for license plate screws, the head of the screw is a light, and requires minimal wiring!!

Those are the lights that Lordo sells......$5.00! Super easy to install, and that way if a cop pulls you over for a random license check and is on a power trip/having a bad day...you're home free with these things!

Lordco license plate screws are DOT approved!

a cop can be super anal and say even the aftermarket lights are illegal and still write you up.

technically, if it ain't DOT, it ain't street legal.

The point of some laws is to give an officer the ability to stop you and check you out. Typically, they can't do this without cause. Single tail light on a car was made illegal specifically for this reason. So, if you never, ever, have any reason for not wanting to get pulled over, then I would speculate that you don't have to worry about getting a ticket for no plate light.

Aren't a lot of stock bikes "technically" illegal? I heard this from one of my mechanic buddies.

I wouldn't worry about that little stuff, I'm more concerned about being killed, or actually "caught" for speeding once. ;)

Very true if it is not DOT it is in all sense of the word considered illegal, that is he/she wants to be a dick. :evilgrin

I posted this up on another site yesterday and thought i'd paste it here as it's semi related:

So after rippin up the backroads of Shawnigan and Cowichan with a few guys we stop for a coffee in Duncan. I leave to head back to Victoria by myself going through Duncan at less than the speed limit. I'm in the slow lane and as i get past the bridge i notice a bike cop slowly comming up in the fast lane. As he gets closer to me he changes lanes and pulls me over. I take off my helmet and approach him on his bike and he's saying something so i lean closer and say, "i'm sorry, i can't hear you". Apparently he was talking into his headset cause he barks back at me "I wasn't talking to you, step back!" So i wait for him to finish then turn my hands up and pollitely say "What's goin on?" He says "I pulled you over cause you have an illedgeable plate". I give him my licence and reg and say i'm sorry, i didn't think it was a problem. He then goes into a little rant saying "Don't say your sorry, i ride a bike too and there's no reason for your plate to be bent, i'm sick and tired of you victoria guys comming up here tearing up our roads at 2 or 3 times the limit with your plates bent up so they can't be read, blah blah blah, tell your friends i'll be giving them tickets too if i see their's bent". He then says "What possible reason do you have for bending your plate?" So i reach down and push it flat and say "I think it looks stupid like this." He then says "You just destroyed the evidence but i'm gonna take a pic of it anyway" and he bends it up till it's almost horizontal. I'll admit it was bent somewhat (i've seen WAY more) but not as much as he bent it. So along comes his buddy in a cop car with the camera and he takes a couple of pics and give me a $196. ticket. I'll admit i'm not a fan of any athority figures but i don't envy them and try to show em respect, but this guy was being a real prick right from the get go for no reason, night and day from the cop i ran into on Otterpoint last week.

No. Every brand new bike is 100% legal as it sits on the showroom floor.

Take off the side reflectors. Illegal.

I would be going to court on that one. I am sure that the Judge would throw it out as soon as he hears that the cop touched your plate.

The cop says that you were "destroying evidence" by bending the plate back down to the proper position. At the same time, the cop is "planting evidence" by bending the plate to incriminate you.

I am not a lawyer, but I am sure that you could get out of this one as you were polite, touch off you helmet, and weren't speeding. Maybe your rear tire hit the plate as you went over a large bump and bent it up.

Sounds like the cop is a prick becuase he can't actually keep up to sportbike riders to give them a ticket.

Ya, i'll definitly be disputing this one. I would think once he bent the plate up the pic he took means nothing. I think that it must have got a little bent when i had the new tires put on. :spinsmile

He was the smallest bike cop i'd seen.

The minute he touched your plate he screwed himself. You have yourself an easy fight there. Make sure you quote him. Sounds llike an asshole.

Ok Im also from vic and often get harrased there a little anal here
the question i have is this, i know its done in van but have yet to see it here... mounting your plate UNDER the undertail (see picture) is this a no no ? and trouble waiting to happen or is it ok if its in a proper mounting bracket. is it visable? yes a little more diffacult to see well sure.. but because of the undertail exaust it just fits here a whole lot better. as u can see not a whole lot of room for it bellow the tail light, maybe pointing straight down instead of on an angle like this guy?
licence plate flipper? link? www.?

thanks for your answers

yes where the plate is mounted now is a no no, if the plate is obstructed such as where it is mounted now, it is an offence as well not having a plate light, 218$ plus if you ever get a ticket. Nice exhaust

I think the zip ties holding that guy's plate would melt off. Then he'd be ticketed for having no plate at all! :rtfm

Number plates in horizontal position
3.02 A number plate shall at all times be securely fastened in a horizontal position to the vehicle for which it is issued.

Plates to be unobstructed
3.03 A number plate must be kept entirely unobstructed and free from dirt or foreign material, so that the numbers and letters on it may be plainly seen and read at all times and so that the numbers and letters may be accurately photographed using a speed monitoring device or traffic light safety device prescribed under section 83.1 of the Act.

That's what it says...$196 fine if it isn't like it says. Don't kill the messenger.

Licence plate lamp
4.16 (1) The rear licence plate of a vehicle must be illuminated by a lamp that is capable of displaying only white light so that the numbers on the licence plate are legible from a distance of 15 m to the rear of the vehicle.

(2) The lamp required by subsection (1)

(a) must illuminate whenever the headlamps or parking lamps are illuminated, and

(b) must not project white light to the rear of the vehicle.

Probably a $109 ticket for the light?

The cop wont need to use the photo as evidence that you had a bent plate. All he needs is his word. The photo would only serve as an example of what he saw and would not be used as evidence. However, destroying evidence could get you in trouble, so perhaps saying that would not be wise.

i don't get why you need lights on your plate in the day time, night sure, but in the day time when most get pulled over it's almost impossible to notice if it's on or not. And theoretically when you're pulled over the bikes off thus the light's off so there goes that...

if it's night time and you don't have lights on your plate how is the cop gonna give you a ticket when you don't stop :-) As soon as I get the time I'm mounting my plate waaaaay up under the tail on my bike, when no one is on the bike the suspension sits high enough that it's visible, when your on the bike the tire obscures about 1/2 the plate :-)
