View Full Version : Scott and Sav adventure #4 - Duffy in a Cage

Well, since my bike's getting some trick work done I was feeling the need to get the hell out of dodge and at least give the car a bit of attention. So after a late saturday night installing a racing steering wheel and gear shift lever from OMP; I had to test out my new gear before I hit the track on October 4th, so I figured the Duffy was a good way to do it. I called a buddy to go, and sure enough the Porsche club was heading up on the very same day. So @ 7:00 a.m. we headed out.
FYI: SAV and I forgot our camera, so there really aren't any pics of us.

Overall it was a good time... not really any rain and not a SINGLE cop! And I was surprised, these guys could really drive.
You'd think a porsche club would be full of a bunch of snobby pricks, but if you consider the fact that most of these cars can be had for $15,000 to $50,000 it's not that out of reach. and the cayman was the only car worth 80+.
All in all, it was a good time.... for a cage ;)

I saw you guys heading down the canyon on Sunday. i was on the mud covered BMW 1150gs.
I was doing about 145 and was passed like I was standing still by a couple of those cars.
Looked like you all had a ton of fun.

Saw you guys coming the other way. I was in my silver jeep. Tell the silver boxter driver to learn how the hell to drive or get the hell off the road, as he or she nearly creamed me taking up half my lane in a blind corner.
This is what I was doing this weekend.

$80,000 for a hardtop Boxter? A little much I think...even $100,000+ for a Cayman S. I'd rather buy a C6 Z06 to beat Porsches and Ferraris. :laughing

$69K base for the regular Cayman, not too bad.

The only Ferrari that's beaten me yet was an F430 Challenge Stradale... and considering the guy spent about 12 times as much as I did on that car and it has 500+ horsepower... I didn't feel too bad. ;)
I've only been on the track with 3 Ferrari's... one faster, one slower and one that was about similiar. That includes a 430 challenge, a 430 spyder and a 360 Modena.
Also, you're only allowed to brag about the cars if you own one Phil. Otherwise you're kinda like those guys that drive around in Harley spec trucks making fun of sportbikes, yet they don't ride at all...

If you consider the price of a '03 Turbo and a '03 Z06...the Porsche is more then double. So it that really a fair comparison? The '03 Z06 is $40,000-$50,00.
That 911 GT3 RS is one sweet machine. But you know me, Id still get a Ferrari. I'd take the 360 Challenge Stradale.

LOL this thread is funny. You got one guy talking about his dream car, the other guy saying his old (nothing wrong with that) 911 is faster than the other guys dream car, but both dont realize that the Caymen S (not pictured) will beat both probably with a lil tuning. Scott face it your 911 is a classic icon, and in that same respect its time to pass on the throne to the new prince.... the Caymen. I personally like the new 997 GT3RS thats coming out, and I'll always like the 96/97 911 Turbos. The 996/997 I dont care for at all.

You'd be surprised, all the reviews Ive read say the CaymAn is restricted to keep the 911 as their top model (now the carrera gt is gone). I'll bet a caymAn will hold its own against a ferrari, it may not win, but it wont get destroyed, like a gixxer does to kawi junk! Which Z06 are we talking about here? C6 or C5? C6 is a tough car to beat with its incredible power to weight ratio. But all will be owned by my Ariel Atom!:evilgrin

Yes I know the Cayman is detuned. I personally think that is soooo lame. Why would a car manufacturer come out with a car that is not at its full potential? Its like Suzuki coming out with a Gixxer 1000 with 50hp. Why doesnt Porsche just up the 911 instead of detuning the Cayman.

Furious Fiero
09-18-2006, 11:40 PM
Audi doesn't own Lamborghini, VW does. And VW owns Audi.
You shouldn't believe everything you hear. The guy reading in the video is
clueless. The R8 is *not* a Gallardo ripoff. It's based on the "Audi Le Mans
Quattro" concept, and it uses the 5.2l V10 FSI found in the Audi S8, and with
Quattro.
At least, that's according to the latest *official* announcement... Feel free to
translate it if you want:
http://www.audi.de/audi/de/de2/unternehmen/news/pressespiegel/Audi_bringt_den_R8_in_einer_Kleinserie.html
Do a bit of research and you'll find that the Gallardo crap is nothing but
rumours.
Its based on the Gallardo...they even used Gallardo parts on it for testing. ie, wheels, interior, suspension components. I have done my research.
PS-I still like the R8. Its gonna be one sweet car...but if I had the choice, Id still take a Gallardo.
You can even see first hand the Gallardo wheels on it...
Off to bed, we'll argue some more tommorow! :laughing :rockon

But seriously, I was out for a ride Sunday not too early. Saw one cruiser, saw one silver/red Beemer, saw one group of 3 KTM Adventure, some sliver sport tourer and something else (KTM distracted me). No sport bikes! Just a kid on a 600RR on the upper levels who would pass, and slow down and then pass and slow down again. Either he went to the Fairy, or turnered around for home at Horseshoe Bay and the rain.

The 997 GT3 RS is an amazing car, one which I plan to buy when I retire this old Dog.
You're right though, that Cayman is built perfectly with that mid engine and very rigid frame. They really should have put more power in it, but that will be to come later.
Phil, as much as I think they are by FAR the most beautiful cars, Ferrari's are pieces of shit, and most will agree. Porsche may not be as pretty or as hard to reach in terms of exculsivity, but we're not talking about Robson appeal, we're talking which is the better track car. And Porsche (as well as Lamborghini) has Ferrari outdone in their street cars.
I'd love to one day own a Ferrari, but only as a showpiece. It's just not practical to drive, street or track.
Made man, most of the 944's there were actually 951 Turbos (I don't know their model's that well). They held up just fine. They were a little slower than most, but one of the guys there has a lot of work done to his and he's an amazing driver. I didn't bother trying to keep up with him, I was on the track with him at portland and already had learned my lesson. lol

Why doesnt Porsche just up the 911 instead of detuning the Cayman.
The 911's ancient design is the reason they dont "up" it anymore. Turns out having your motor hanging off your ass doesn't help in the handling dept. Porsche detuned the Cayman because of all their loyal customers, wanting to keep their 911s as the top model. Its ghey, but its what they did. I'd love to see what a cayman can do when its "tuned". Im sure it will handle as well as any Ferrari and C5s aren't corner carvers by any means, they are more suited to drag racing.
Also, Gallardo uses an Audi engine... which came first, the chicken or the egg?
Cuski, R8 is a Lambo rip off, face it. Ever hear of platform sharing? Its a cost effective way of bringing new products to market by using existing chassis and drivetrains. The wheels on the test mule R8 pictured are clearly Gallardo wheels. I'd bet the V10 motor in the R8 will be a lambo derivative as well. But Im sure Audi will use its DSG tranny which probably isn't that much different than the E Gear model in the lambo.
Audi may have helped developed the Engine for Lambo, but it was first used in a Lambo. So therefore Lambo had the engine in production first, hence why the R8 is a Lambo ripoff. Any other questions?
Lets keep this thread going.

hmm, Well I agree about the 70/30 weight distribution not being a great design, it sure makes for some interesting track days. ;)
How about a better comparison. The 997 Turbo v.s. 997 GT3 RS?
I was looking at the GT3 yesterday and noticed Porsche has signed an agreement with OMP to make their racing parts. Something I found fitting as I just dumped a bunch of OMP crap into my car this weekend.

Wait wait where did you see and 997 GT3 RS? As far as I know the RS model is in the works. Im guess (could be wrong as usual) that you saw a 997 GT3. The RS is supposed to be lighter with the Carrera 4s wider rear fenders and tires.
I like the Gt3 because its more race oriented. The turbo is nice, but I prefer more raw/purer driving experience. Plus the GT3 has to handle much better with out the extra weight of the AWD system in the Turbo. Its funny as cars get more expensive, they less they have. I love the 360CS because its more barebones than the 360. Same with the GT3 VS the Turbo. But thats me.

OMG! A Ferrari is NOT a drag racing machine. Ive been in a Porsches, Vettes, and a Ferraris...the best handling car of all those was a Ferrari....and it wasnt new, it was a 94' 348 Spider. (I actually drove it) It was by far the best handling car I have ever been in. It was seriously a street legal go-kart. Have you noticed Ferraris are almost never the most powerful. The engineering that goes into the engine is very extensive. They are one of the top handling cars in the world. Also, check out the new Corvette Z06. They didnt do testing and tuning at a drag track...they did it at Nurburgring. The new Z06 is one of the top Handling cars on the market. What can you buy for $100,000 that handles better and is more powerful then the C6 Z06...NOTHING!

The 911 Gt3 RS I think is already out in Europe. I have seen it testing on Nurburgring already. Should be in North America soon...Im sure Scott knows more about those Penis Enlarging machines :laughing

Okay Phil, now I really know you're nuts. ;) While the 348 may be able to pull a decent Lateral G, porsches will consistently pull higher numbers on the skidpad.
FYI, I did mention to you that the last 348 that was at the track with us started on fire right? lol
Oh, and the "seat of the pants dyno/G-meter" is always biased to whichever car you like better ;)

You're trying to say a Ferrari ISN'T a penis extender? lol
With the exception of one guy, everytime we've been to the track with the Ferrari boys... they're a bunch of stuck up assholes. I'll take Porsche any day. :D

Pretty much. A Ferrari pulls 5gs, where as a Porsche only pulls 0.5gs...hahahahha

Ya a Ferrari is a Penis extender...but a Ferrari has more character then a Porsche in my opinion.

Made man, most of the 944's there were actually 951 Turbos (I don't know their model's that well). They held up just fine. They were a little slower than most, but one of the guys there has a lot of work done to his and he's an amazing driver. I didn't bother trying to keep up with him, I was on the track with him at portland and already had learned my lesson. lol
I was more intrested in how was it in the corners? As good as they say it is with the 50/50 weight ratio (really big go kart?)?
