View Full Version : What is a MUST have for the trunk?

As we are all getting to the point of insuring our bikes (for those of us not riding already) I am wondering what I should get to store away under my seat.
The stock tool set, and raingear seem obvious, but what else should I have?

I carry a map book, kickstand puck, disc lock, and tool kit. I used to carry my digi-cam, but I sold it and am now waiting for my Digi-vid. Don't forget the pen and paper.....ya never know.
If ya need a kickstand puck, let me know. I can make them here at the shop. 12 Ga. Galv'd material 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" with a 1/2' lip all around.

I can barely put a baseball cap in mine.
A can of coke would be nice.
The smallest size MagLite. Gives plenty of light and takes up no space. I don't carry a disc lock anymore because the downside of riding away with the thing on far outweighs the remote possibility of somebody stealing it with the steering locked anyway.

I'll see if I can make a bunch in time for the dinner.
tire pressure gauge is a must, especially if going on long day trips.... they take up next to no room. Like someone mentioned about, a small maglite flashlight is a good idea in case you break down at night.
man are you guys driving station wagons or sumthin!!! i can barely get my cellphone and a candy bar in there:eek

OK, a lot of these are good ideas. I think I will add the map book, maglite, disc lock, pen and paper, stand puck (by atomlowe) and a tire gauge.
I have heard about air cartridges or something like that? For emergency tire pumping? I have no idea what these are, but a few Americans I chat with swear by them.

If you read on the can, they're not supposed to be used on a bike. I don't know why, but they all say that.

I carry a toolkit, tire pressure gauge, maglight, and a screw driver with a buch of interchangeable bits, and one thing that nobody mentioned, a bike cargo net. Can come in handy sometimes. Most I have ever fit in was all of the above plus a cell phone, sony discman, coke, t-shirt, and a set of headphones. The key is organizational skills. you would be amazed at what you can fit in a 6R's trunk. one of my friends fit a 12 pack of bear in his 929RR. Those things have huge trunks.:D

I remember when I almost bought a '98 900RR and the trunk was a selling feature for me. It was frickin' huge... I could have picked up groceries with that bad boy..

Using a cargo net, I strapped two cases of beer and actually got it home:eek . Should have seen the look on some peoples faces.

Yes, my 929 does have a fairly spacious interior, close to 1 cubic foot of space! :)
Even with the PCIII, the registration papers and owners manual, I should be able to fit everything mentioned in this thread--except the beer. That would have to be put in my backpack. ;)
Cargo net, pressure gage, tool kit, pen, full rain gear (rolled up) and small towel (ride in the rain a lot).

I'm a IT guy, and occasionally need to go out and visit some of our sites. Well, last summer it was common for me to have a small desktop computer or a keyboard strapped to the backseat with the cargo net..
I think the keyboard looked funniest though.. still in that long brown box sideways.. sorta made the bike have a rudder.. looked like a jet! :laughing

I'd like a puck, please.
I keep:
tire guage, shammy cloth, flashlight, tool kit, insurance, manual, and I'm thinking of getting one of those air cartrdges. I've seen them at BK (yesterday, actually) and i think it was actually made for bikes. I usually have my tank bag with me and so I keep lock, and rain gear in there. Maybe i will try to fit that all into my new bike too. A map and a pen would be a good idea but i don't have those yet.
If they've got tire inflator cartridges for bikes now, I'm all over it. Do you remember how much it was? Maybe we could go in on a group buy and get Trevor to drop the 200% mark-up.:D
P.S. I'm kidding, Farhad....Please don't kill me.

I think I may be in on a little GP for those, depending on $$. How much are they at BK?

Sorry, I can't remember the price right now. I'll call, but I won't be able to do so until Tuesday 'cause i work during their open hours. Can someone else call Trevor sooner? If not, i'll do it on Tuesday. I'd be in for a group buy too.

Does one cartridge fill one tire? If so, I'd like to get in on this GP.

Called BK today, spoke to Ron about the tire inflator cartridges, they don't carry anything of the sort. Talked to Ron and he said that he you get a flat while on the road the best thing to do is to pull over and call someone. As if oyu use any of the kits, the gel type, you will have to replace the tire and the cartridges, you will need a few of them to inflate it and that too won't keep it properly inflated as "the bead" would most likely have come off by then.....
Ron went on to say that it happens so rarely that you really shouldn't worry about it, he mentioned that even cruisers/tourers don't have anything good for a puncture....
I do remember though that when I got my blue ZX6R I had developed a slow puncture andgot it fixed at the shop with a rubber/sillicone stub, basically as it heats it becomes rubber kinda thing, that is the best....was at nearly 15k and still had no problem with that tire....

Honda takes care of their riders, providing us with enough space to hold several BOXES of condoms! :) Granted, I have not tested the limits of my trunks condom capacity (I am in a bit of a dry spell :() but it does hold a lot.

After i put my PCII in my trunk on top of the ECU, the trunk space is good for a pack of gum.

Pullin up a old thread...
My bro's '94 RF600 was a great bike. It had a glove compartment in the front, which was PERFECT for wallet/cell/etc etc.. and the trunk was huge!

As for bike flats, I've had a ton. That's why I have BCAA...they just tow me home. For the remote spots where cell phone doesn't work I have a tiny plug kit from Canadian tire and a small bicycle pump in the trunk. Used it once and it saved my bacon.

Eh yo, aside from the goodies mentioned, and some morphine for the occassional spillage, i decided to start bringing some of those auto parts store tire plugs with me for long trips. the CO2 idea is a good one too, but i dont think they build enough presure to get beyond adequate inflation.... the tire plugs do work as they self vulcanize to the rubber. Of course it's not license to ride as normal, but it'll get you out of the sticks (not just surrey) when you catch a nail. I rode on one for about a week of easy riding before a new tire arrived.. just check the airpressure before every ride.:happysq

Trunk?????All I`ve got under my seat is exhaust pipes.
If I had a trunk I`d put a homing device in it so that if my bike ever got scooped I could track the Mofo down. :gun :gun :gun

*** I also keep windex and some paper towels under my seat.
For a spray bottle that is really tiny - get a bottle of travel-size hair spray and (when empty) wash it out thoroughly and just add windex etc.
I keep paper towels folded into quarters and in a zip-lock baggie at the bottom of the "trunk". The cushioning effect of the half-dozen or so paper towels also stop the rattling of hard items, like disc lock and tire gauge when I go over bumps.
*** I keep my "Emergency Contact Infromation" in another baggie under the seat too.
*** OH, and I keep coins in a plastic film container. This is handy for parking meters or making change for gas, lunch etc. I try to keep mostly only quarters, loonies and toonies.

My conundrum is downsizing (luggage wise) from an ST1100 with hard bags to the Busa.....
now I just have room for rainpants, rain gloves, stock toolkit and the bikes insurance papers
I did sneak in a tire plug kit too
My riding jacket is another story...I think all the pockets are full of something.
