We did this ride a little while ago while my bike was getting some service done, however, I only got around to uploading the pics today. Jeremy at John Valk lent me a 2004 Multistrada 1000ds for the weekend. Ugliest bike on the planet? True. However, it's definitely a bike that you'll fall in love with and soon realize that true love is blind.

So we headed out with my girl's parents so they could get a ride in with their new bike, a 2004 BMW F650GS. Not wanting to put too many KM on a demo bike we just did a short 400km round trip, which soon clearly was too short of a ride. Barely 5 minutes from the dealership I started thinking of ways that I could buy this bike. Savannah was comfortable in the back, our luggage was neatly tucked into the hard bags and there was no painful 115 db exhaust barking at me out of every twist of the throttle. Acceleration was smooth and resulted in some unexpected wheelies (in front of the girl's parents no less ;))

After heading out on the ferry we decided to run down some of the twistier bits out towards Port Renfrew. The bike handled like a dream even being fully loaded, the only complaint I had was the center stand really dragged in the corners and slowed me down to the point I really wasn't having too much fun in the tight stuff. However, this annoyance would be easily solved by removing it as they've done with the newer Multi's, as well as increased cornering clearance.

The bike's bags held more than enough for our weekend trip and with an added tailbag would be sufficient for longer getaways. They were also quite easy to pack and went on and off the bike with ease.

While the ride wasn't the longest or providing us with the best roads, the trip was quite the experience just to try out a different bike, which was clearly more suitable for our style of riding.

Basically, it would have been a hell of a lot more fun with more time to explore the island, but it was great to get a taste what this bike is capable of.

Just say no to Multistradas.

Just say no to Multistradas.

Have you ridden one? Because you need to spend seat time on one before you can make that statement. Of all the bikes I've ever ridden, I'd say it's definitely one of the best.

And Slam, those are BMW City pants. Pricey, but worth it.

i have seen a few of these around, while they may not look as hot as the ''DLcati1000'', i'm sure its quite a comfortable ride. by the looks of the seating pos, it appears you could ride that all day.:)

So does this mean the the monster is on it's way out? As fun as your SR4 is I'm amazed that you did all that touring two up on it. Unless you're going to be adding to your stable I suggest you pick up something that still satisfies your need to dice it up when you're riding solo, so while the Multi was great with luggage and pillion it may not be up to snuff on solo local rides with less flash and dash.

Everyone's a critic. You're a tall dude, you dwarf that thing. Nothing but jealousy here. Sounds like you had a blast.

Nope Steve, the S4R is sticking around. ;) Remember guys, this ride was just the one in June... I still have yet to post up the pics for the Cali trip. ;)

BTW Steve, more realistically I'd keep the Ducati for riding in California and may even ship the bike down there, while buying something like the BMW 1200GS for touring.

the Multistrada is downright hidious... I'm surprised you didnt take a rear end pic, its the only angle where it looks ok...

the girl in the pic looks totally familiar to me... cant put my finger on it though...

Well, the bike ain't pretty, I made that pretty clear in my first post. But that isn't the point. Put a Multistrata and any japanese sportbike in front of me and I'd certainly choose the Multi.

and quit stalking my gf dude. ;)

I was making a joke, a 'strada was on my short list. I rode all the way down BC with a retired NY cop who had a Multistrada piled to the moon with gear - it was even more ugly than I thought in real life but it looked like a do-it-all bike for sure. He certainly had no problem keeping up to me either, and no problem speeding. He had been on the road for 12,000 miles already, and was heading down to Cali as part of his loop back.

Holy Mother of God is that thing ugly though!

The front end of the bike could use a face-lift, but that didn't stop Susanna from putting her order in on her 1100S....she says she doesn't see the front when she's behind the handlebars anyways.

We just did a trip to the North Coast on our bikes....she deffinately had a much more comfortable ride. If any one is thinking about taking the inside passage sailing from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert, bring lots of cash!

The ride back was long.....just south of Cash Creek, Susanna was making all the grasshoppers jump, I was getting peppered....I still cant get them out of my jacket. lol

The only thing I don't like about the mulit is it's a ducati. Very hard to get parts for in a timely manner. They're not cheap to buy insure ride or maintain. For that it loses my vote. I have to say I lovin the Super Duke though and it might just sway me away from getting the gixxer next year.
