I guess he doesn't use his rear brake very often to not notice that his leg was gone.
But still, wouldn't you notice it when you're sliding around on all the blood you're dripping all over your back tire. What about the crimson rooster tail hitting the traffic behind him...hmm. I've been watching too many Tarantino films.

no kidding, when you suffer some kinda trauma of that scale you go into shock. Which is a good thing for the most part, cause you don't instantly bleed to death, Really once the ligament comes off.
At work some guys hand got completely smashed in one of the rock crushers.
i could see his bones, the flesh was destroyed, but in the end despite the fact that every vain in his hand was basically open, there was a sum total of 7 or 8 drops of blood around the scene. I mean little kids will lose more blood from a nose bleed.

I can see him pulling up to a stop sign, putting his foot down and....... oops!
Tarantino? I was thinking more Monty Python and the Black Kinght:
(Edit: I will leave it to the mods to hopefully merge the threads)

the Black Knight
Arthur: Now stand aside, worthy adversary.
Black Knight: 'Tis but a scratch.
Arthur: A SCRATCH? Your arm's off!
Black Knight: No it isn't!
Arthur: Well what's that then? (pointing to the arm lying on the ground)
Black Knight: I've had worse.
Arthur: You LIAR!
Black Knight: Come on, you pansy!
