View Full Version : Riding the Island and Sunshine Coast!

A small group of us and my girlfriend driving the support truck planned to ride the sunshine coast and the Vancouver Island this past weekend. Since the weather was looking better on the island we decided to go to Nanaimo first. Once in Nanaimo it started to get sunny which was great! We stopped for lunch at Mrs Ritchie's for the Big Mountain Burger! Midway through my 'you can feed a small village' sized burger the skys opened up and it rained so hard we wanted to build an ark. We waited awhile until it let up and continue are way to Tofino. Five minutes in our ride the rain came again and with a vengeance. This rain storm can only be compared to a tropical downpour, in seconds we were soaked to the bone, riding through massive puddles, cars splashing us, etc. It was stupid! However, every light we stopped at we could do nothing but look at each other and start smiling. About 20mins of shitty weather the rains stopped and the streets dried up. 3/4s of the way to Tofino, we saw a sign saying gravel on the road for the next 9kms. Ok, that’s fine. We will just slow down and take it easy. What the sign SHOULD have said was 'no road, 9kms of gravel road'. 4kms into of riding a road only fit for a motard we gave up. Stopping on the side of the road we checked out our bikes to see what they looked like. Well it wasn't good… Turning around and coming back through this mess we did our best not to dump our bikes. By this time my girlfriend thinks were nuts. Good to get that out of the way now since this is her first motorcycle trip. The sun was finally out now and we enjoying the twisties of highway. We were near the end of the highway when we rounded a corner to a Cadillac flashing his lights at us. Too late, the police car ten cars back nailed us doing 109 in a 80 zone. On came the lights so we pulled over at the next stop. The police came out of his car and I greeted him. The first words out of his mouth were "thanks for stopping!" To his surprise our documents and licenses were all in order and he decided to let us go with a verbal warning. :rockon Apparently 50% of the people he pulls over here do not have a license or insurance. Before we arrived in Courtenay we were treated to another bout of rain. We were staying with one of the rider's family and camping out back. Perfect setting for a roaring campfire!

When we woke up the next morning we were relieved to see open blue sky. We took it easy in the morning and hit up Gold River in the afternoon. The Gold River road was light with traffic and cops… giddy. This is a great highway; I remember it well from the last year I did it. The first half is definitely more fun than the last half. For the last half, my girlfriend jumped on the back on we rode the rest of the way. This was only her second time being on a motorcycle so I was anxious to see how she would do. Everything was great, for the next 80kms she knew exactly what to do, I barely noticed her on the back. It was good for her to finally see why I have such a big shit eating grin on after a ride. We slowly made our way back to the campsite and spent the evening laughing, drinking, and roasting any food we could put on a roasting stick.

On the final day we back home via the sunshine coast and boy was it boring. 4 hours of ferry sailing and 3 hours of waiting around, for 90 minutes of riding. Only to arrive in Horseshoe bay for gridlock allllllllllllllllllllllllllllll down the highway #1 to home. Despite all this we all had a blast and will do it again next year with some modifications.

That sandwich shouldn't be allowed.
No human being should ingest the likes of it! My god...
Looks like an awesome trip though! Thanks for sharing the pics Lee :D
Besides the tropical rains looks like an amazing ride.

You guys shoulda given me a shout when you got rained out near Port Alberni Lee!! Hot tub's in great running order and the BBQ's always ready to go. We had a biker chicks bikini car wash in Vic on Saturday - would have loved to have you join us! We only rode through drizzles at the top of the Malahat, and a quick mist again when I rode back through Nanaimo. Coulda taken you on some more twisty backroads... sure am glad you helped talk me into moving back over here! Oh well... glad to hear you guys enjoyed the island... maybe next time!

Jane, I really want to post up on islandriders.ca about our trip but it was so up in the air and we created a new schedule every hour. You and your group would have been pretty mad with us city folk ;) Next year we are going to skip the enture sunshine coast and just ride the island. I know the backroads you are talking about... they are great!!! Take care.

LOL yeah they all know what you talk about when you say 'city folk' haha. I brought a bit of that 'city folkedness' over here and whip it out from time to time when I'm feeling iffy about a ride... as for the back roads... everyone from the mainland assumes that there's only a handful if that, of routes over here to do, little to they know - and much to my surprise, I managed to put nearly 10000km on my bike in 3 months, riding JUST the island, and barely rode the same road twice! Anyways, we'll catch some of you mainlanders on a ride out this way sooner or later. :)

Wowsers I'd like to see that burger next to a cheesburger from McDicks. Sounds like you had a good trip despite this shit weather and traffic. Hope that white VFR came clean.

So did you happen to see where there was a chunk of GSXR Fairing (Red/Black) zapped to a tree on a 60 km/h corner about 20 km out of Gold River by the lake, hahahahahaha, yeah that was one of our guys from last week.

This was the corner he bit it on.....

oh I know that corner! If I looked at that piece while riding I would be adding more pieces to that tree. The rider ahead of me easily put his knee down for that one. I was behind him (with passenger) so I took it easier. The last 40k heading towards Gold River is very passenger friendly, but the first 40K is best done solo.

It's good to see they are fixing alot of the dips in the road. Last year I sacked myself bad enough to pull over, get off the bike, and walk it off.

HAHAHAAH! Yeah, I watched him go in and almost followed him myself, luckily I didnt and all that was damaged was the bike and his pride.

If you live in Quesnel, which route did you take down to the island? That would be a good haul of trip!

HAHAHHAHA bunny's are fun to play with because they are so docile, kind of like Sat.

We actually left from Prince George on our first day and hit Horstings for lunch, then backtracked to the 99 and headed for Pemberton and then Lillooet and Lytton to do the Duffy Lake. Second day of our trip we went form Nanaimo to Gold River then back to Victoria, with a stop in there for bike reassembly and rider health assessment.

Good report, glad you had a great time despite the weather. That gravel road looks beautiful by comparison to most gravel roads up here, and that's why I want to get a dual-sport bike, lol.

Good that the weather turned out in the end.
But even better I had to work that weekend. :laughing

BTW those look suspiciously like someone I know... I hope Anni
Wasn't swimming in the rain with them on the back seat with you or I
think you should consider them sold. :flashy
