Dunno if it's been done yet, but here it is...

When : Sunday 17 Feb 2008
Where: Sunshine Coast.
What: Ducati Hypermotard 1100S Vs BMW HP2 R1200

We caught the 1120 ferry out of Horseshoe bay.
Even yesterday it was probably a good idea to give time to some roads to defrost a bit.

Gorgeous winter day to be on the Ferry. My favorite time of the year.
On Saturday I did the usual Squamish run with another buddy. Say what you want, but the Ferry ride is way more relaxing and enjoyable. The Sunshine coast is for me the best riding right next door to Vancouver. Beats Hwy1/Hwy7 any time. $28.10 for the ferry is the price to pay. That might just cover the fuel cost to get back and forth to Hope. Enough ranting.

After a quick food fix a the Gumboot in Roberts Creek to allow the Ferry traffic to disappear, we took our first stop in Sargeant Bay.

http://gstouring.com/BCSB/SunCoastTard/HMotardSargeant.jpg
That little road running parrallel to Hwy101 is a motard heaven. A real little roller-coaster has the grade changes constantly with blind corners. The only stress is with all the driveways.

We ended up going to Egmont. Where all the following pictures were taken.

http://gstouring.com/BCSB/SunCoastTard/SizeMatters.jpg

Size : The HP clearly is the winner here. Your morphology will dictate which one your ride. The big guys can have the advantage to ride both. But let me tell you that since I road the first Hyper Motard last summer for half an hour around downtown, it is not easy. So italian size guys will be happy there, However they would not be able to do anything with the HP.

Weight : A draw. You may be surprised to learn that both bikes weight the same dry. (175 Kg)

Look : Hypermotard. That is my personal taste, but you have to admit that the designers have gone the extra length on the Ducati. That tale light for example is a work of art. Under seat exhaust for a cleaner look too.

http://gstouring.com/BCSB/SunCoastTard/HMEngine.jpg

Sound Idle : Hypermotard. low grunt and clutch all the way.
Sound Running : HP2. yeah I like my Akropovic backfire sound more. After market exhaust for that Motard will be here soon, and then I will change my mind for sure ;-)

http://gstouring.com/BCSB/SunCoastTard/NosesNoses.jpg
Fuel Range : HP2 wins. Easy one because the Ducati had to be pushed off the Ferry, has it was completely dry. We pushed all the way to the Blenz coffee shop to the amusement of the Sunday tourists. I wish I had a video.
Sure that warning light came on, but it was a simple choice of gunning it to make the ferry (Ruby lake at 1536 - Ferry leaves Langdale at 1620) or stop for fuel. The Hypermotard actually coasted half of the dual lane leading to the terminal. By a pure miracle it started again just enough to load on board.
The HP2 carried 13L, just half a liter more than the HM. I was running on reserve too, but enough to make it to the westmount chevron.
So boys, you want to top up that bike in Sechelt, not the first station past Roberts Creek. Or ride less aggressively :-)

http://gstouring.com/BCSB/SunCoastTard/YouOk.jpg

Handling : HM all the way baby. Especially in some capable hands this baby rocks and will give you joy at every corner.
The HP was design for off road in mind. The HM stops where the pavement ends. The HP just goes on (2 bikes in one).

http://gstouring.com/BCSB/SunCoastTard/Bikesferry.jpg
On the ferry back to Horseshoe bay.
General public interest: Draw. This picture was taken while nobody was around but onlookers came round a few times. Both bike generate quite some comments and questions as they look pretty unusual compare to what is generally on the street.

Demo days are coming. Be aware that this year Ducati starts its tour early and on the west coast. BMW will be in May as usual. So check the web for dates and try both if you can.

http://gstouring.com/BCSB/SunCoastTard/TheEnd.jpg
Back to horseshoe bay.
A friend on his R1 came to the rescue with some fuel.
So we ended up going home in the dark.

Lights : HP2 wins that one. I really felt that the HM headlight was a bit weak. So after market fog lights will be a nice safety feature for any HM owner. The Ducati red does not help much in the dark for visibility.

The End.
Thanks for reading.

How well do the HP2's brakes work?

Damn I wanted to write about that.
They do work pretty well. I've seen peoples doing Endos, so they do bite.

But I must admit that they can be a bit short in tricky/unexpected situations.
The HM is ahead with 2 discs. Again I think that is due to the principal target market for each bike.

Fair enough and I do think I did hear the sound of an Arkro barking down the way.

Yup. It'll be good to see you next time you're up.

Yes bring those bikes out on Kevin's " Cracker and Binner " ride. You will soon realize those bikes are not supermotos.

Nice bikes and pics, looks like a great ride. But still far from a real supermoto ride.

Yes those bikes are certainly more heavy, and less nimble than most 400/640/650 cc that are the norm so far.

But I guess, street tires, long suspensions, and the sitting position, allows those marketing geniuses at BMW/Ducati, to claim the title.

Squamish back roads a few weeks ago.

Back to back in Porteau Cove.
Trust me the HP2 is tiny compare to that Adventure bike.

I would love to try the KTM.
I think it is sad that we don't see more around.

What? close to the same weight?! The BMW Adventure weighs over 300 lbs less than the Goldwing (490 v.s. 900)! It has a larger fuel tank and can go way more places than the Goldwing.

I won't even get into the looks... geez! ;)

Either one....you see ME on one....fucking KILL me.....:gun :spinsmile

The + sized tard are great for bumpy back roads...Are just as useless as a sport bike for touring, and won't touch a real tard in terms of racing or Hooliganism...Lets see you climb up a flight of stairs on a 400lbs + bike with Marginal Skill levels.!!

Having said that...I love the HyperTart...I think it's a nice around town, upright bike I can play with on the island, and Pose my ass off at the coffee shop. Now I need to call my finance manager...if you'll excuse me ....:coffee

Yeah...........no shit....

Sent an e-mail to Harbour City MS......see what kinda deals they got on the last two Hypers (Black and one Red). Says $13995 then it says $17995....which one is it I asked..?

$18 out the door is retarded....be worth about $9000 next year when all the old fuckers with sore asses are dumping them for comfort bikes.
