Just made a quick trip out to Nazko from Quesnel this afternoon and thought I'd let everyone know what the road conditions were like. Most of us who have ridden this awesomely twisty piece of road know that there can be a lot of gravel, mud or cowshit on it, especially the corners. Well I am happy to report that I never came across anything that made me want to slow down, except for the sharp corners of course. Although, there was one tiny bit of dirt on a straight stretch where you could tell a large vehicle/tractor crossed the hwy and spread some mud across, nothing to worry about though.
Last year the Dept of Transportation did a lot of repaving and it is now a very nice trip. It was a bit on the chilly side, but nothing a hot cup of coffee from the friendly people at the Nazko General Store and Cafe couldn't fix.
At first I thought the only drawback from this trip is that it's not a circle route. But then I realized on the way back to Quesnel it's just as fun as going out.
So if any of you riders are passing through the Cariboo Region and are tired of the slow pace down Hwy 97, try out this gem of a hwy that never ever seems busy. It's about a 200 km round trip from Quesnel.
The best parts of the Nazko start about 10-12 miles out, once you get past some farms and residential areas. After that, it's smooooth sailing. And by sailing I mean that there are lots of places where 200+ km/h is easy. But be carefull, at the end of some of these straights are some well banked twisties that keep coming, corner after corner after corner. I'll make an attemp to post a couple of pics. There was actually one set of corners that I turned around, went back, took a pic with my cellphone, then carved them again.
I almost forgot to mention, that right in Nazko, there is an awesome lake worth taking a dip in on a nice hot day. It's called Marmot Lk and there is a campsite there too.
Watch out for wildlife, this hwy is really known for Moose! I'm not kidding!
