Riding with Newbies - pain in the a$$ but worth it?

Posting Newbie friendly rides is every bit as painful as everyone said it would be. They're young, obnoxious and know perfectly well how to ride "excellently", thank you very much. :D

In spite of the generally obnoxious, know-it-all attitudes that I come across, every now and then I have the pleasure of meeting riders on their first bikes, going through a few seasons with them as they grow into their Ninja 250, and see them continue to improve, build skills. I see them accept the (generally) overly harsh criticisms from all of us on here with humility and an open mind and put the time into track days and longer rides.

They listen quietly to every piece of advice they are given and start to shine. At this point I'm glad I invested the time and energy into riding with them.

I was thinking about this when I got a PM from a newbie who was given the usual dose of BCSB love. The advice was sound, the pointers were valid, the tips and techniques were good but the delivery was pretty hard and the feedback was given so publicly that the Newbie felt quite humiliated and under attack.

To the newbies out ther, all I can say is that, if you find yourself under attack for the way you ride, try to be a grownup about it. Listen and don't get all bent out of shape. You are being given feedback that may end up saving your life. The person giving it may very well be an arrogant dickhead, but rise above that and try to hear their underlying concern for your safety.

To the more seasond folks out there that very often wear the "arrogant dickhead" title, keep up the good work! Keep giving as much feedback as you can, most of us will hear it and take it to heart.

Remember, if you can't get through to them with the gentle approach, stop trying and smack them over the head with a verbal baseball bat in front of their friends. Do your best to humiliate them because it's your mission to "fix" them and they'll definitely listen to your advice if you give it as rudely as possible.

To all of you that have helped me to become a better (not much, but I appreciate you had very little to work with) rider, thanks for your time and company :D

If anyone has tips, ideas or feedback for the rest of us, post up and we'll read around the humourous posts that are sure to be added.

Anyone got a Top-box for sv650 i could borrow?

Looking to potentially borrow a topbox (and mounting system) for a second gen sv650. Route Scout for Ride For Doug

It's about the time of year where I beg a fellow BCSB with more time than me to scout a route for me. Ride For Doug has a Mission backroads component to it, that I'd like to get early feedback of any contruction or road closures that I need to work around.

What I'm looking for is someone to ride the part of it north of the river (I've done the south part already) and let me know if there are any:

road conditions/closures I need to be aware of
changes to the BC Hydro rec area by the dam since last year

I'm looking at taking about 100 bikes through that route on June 3rd.

Found lost license plate

Sorry I didn't get a chance to pick it up since traffic was already moving but I grabbed the number. It looked like it still had bolts attached. Doesn't seem to be any of the stolen bikes listed as far as I can tell.
Plate number is S79284. It's along the highway divider (left lane) westbound lougheed coming up to Harris (Pitt meadows).
Am I supposed to report this to icbc or the fuzz in case it matches a stolen bike etc?

Highway 20 Newhalem, Marblemount, Concrete WA. (LEO)

Came through from Winthrop yesterday. A lot of radar activity between Newhalem, Marblemount and Concrete. I think they were working in pairs. You see the first car, hopefully, and figure that they are now past and you are safe so you pick up the pace only to find about .5k behind the first car is a second one with radar also working. They keep in radio contact and the first lets the second know that you are coming and they watch for you. So....be careful. These places, as most older riders should know, are notorious for LEO. If you are new to this particular part of highway 20...keep a sharp eye. I very nearly got caught by this trick.

Where can I find replacement Engine Bolt?

Anybody know where I can find a replacement engine bolt? Bike is Yamaha FZ6 2006 year. Lost it on the S2S today.

I promised I'd visit my parents today and planned on using the bike. Still do - is this a stupid choice, or acceptable risk for the time being?

Also, should I use thread lock on these bolts? I asked before and was told "no".

I had a lot of things like this happen today. Rode bike since Feb and had no issues. Today I got hit by a bird on the S2S, lost an engine bolt, AND lost my license plate near UBC - all within about 2 hours.

Lesson learned, though. Time to check everything to make sure bike doesn't fall apart around me next ride. From now on I'm using torque wrench for every bolt.
