Some things are worth getting up at 05:30 on a Saturday morning for...
My wife & I caught this morning's 07:20 ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale, rode out to Egmont, came back & had breakfast in Sechelt, visited with friends in Langdale and came back home.
After this ride I must admit to being puzzled as to why this is not a more popular ride for forum members. In Destination Highways this route is rated no. 23, but I do believe it was rated prior to some resurfacing. Personally I would rate this much, much higher. But then again: fortunately, personal tastes differ.
The surface of pretty much the whole section from Sechelt to the Egmont turnoff is as good as you could ever hope for in BC. The road is clean with a perfect surface and grip is great. Even two up we scrubbed the tires pretty close to the edges without breaking into a sweat.
Probably due to the fact that we took the early ferry and were first off, traffic was almost non-existent.
There are many, many corners of varying tightness: something for everyone. There is one very, very viscious closing radius corner that you have to be on top of your game not to misjudge. If you like really tight corners: take the Egmont turnoff and you can do a tighter, slower section. Surface is OK: I would think the motard and KLR guys would especially appreciate this section. For sportbikes it is probably best done at a relaxed pace.
OK, the road is a ferry ride away (which, because of the natural beauty with which we are blessed in BC, still remains a pleasure to me) but to my taste it is far and away the best readily accessible ride around these parts. Had we not visited with friends, we could have been back in Richmond by 2pm: not a long ride by any stretch of the imagination.
I got home a very happy camper. Perhaps a good indication of how much fun it was was the fact that I could not believe it when the fuel light came on. When I thought of it it was obvious that we had done like 250km at that point, but it certainly did not feel like it.
If you have not ridden this road recently: do yourself a favour and try it.
