On June 17th at around 8:40 p.m., RCMP from the Columbia Valley Detachment, assisted by members from the Banff RCMP and Banff Fire Rescue responded to a crash that occurred on Highway 93 through Kootenay National Park.
The crash occurred when the bear crossed the highway in front of a motorcyclist. The operator of the motorcycle, a 49 year old man from Regina, Saskatchewan could not avoid hitting the bear. The bear was killed, and the motorcycle operator was injured.
The man was taken to Banff's Mineral Springs Hospital with "non-life threatening" injuries, although the exact nature of his condition is not known. The motorcycle was towed to Canmore, Alberta.
No factors such as speed or alcohol played a part in this crash. It was simply an unfortunate encounter.
It's bad enough hitting a dog...but a Bear?
My response to animal hits...if you can eat it in a single meal...or it's lower than your front axle...keep going!
