One early morning, I pushed my motorcycle to a gas station 3 blocks from my home. I had just finished de-rusting the gas tank and wanted to fill up before rust forms inside the tank again. The bike is 30 years old. The previous owner last insured it in 2000 then left the bike outside for 8 years. It has varies problems associated with old un-riden motorcycles.
Still at the gas station, I started up the bike. It was not running well. The engine was stalling at low RPM. Some gas was leaking from underneath. I put her into 1st gear and make one slow semi-circle around the gas pumps. The bike stalled twice. The second time it stalled, I grabbed the clutch and coasted. At that moment, flashing lights appeared behind me. It was a police cruiser.
My immediate thought was "It's not a stolen bike". The motorcycle is registered in my name with current insurance. The officer approached me, pointed up at his head and said "helmet?" I was puzzled for a second then I answered "This is a gas station" He said "It doesn't matter. License and registration!" I gave him my papers and waited. 5 minutes later, he issued me a $130 ticket for riding a motorcycle without a helmet. I didn't say anything to him, but inside I was choked. I haven't had a traffic ticket of any type in the last 10+ years. The ticket states I violated section 221(1) of the Motor Vehicle Act. Did I break the law?
