I've been lurking here for about a year now, and finally got around to getting my license and a bike. I'm going to be doing the ProRide day course soon and looking to pick up my first bike soon after I get my license.
I went to see Aaron at Modern and he hooked me up with a helmet, gloves, boots, and a mesh jacket with liner for under $500 including tax, which I thought was decent (right?).
I'm 5'11", 215lbs, and am looking for a comfortable commuter bike that I can take on hwy 1. I live in Van but will need to ride it to Coquitlam on occasion. I'll be getting rid of my car and using this bike for my daily work commute. When I get rid of my car, I'll be looking to hook up a Cozy sidecar to the bike for ferrying around stuff, and rough weather conditions.
I've been doing a lot of research and what I'm looking for is something with:
*Electronic fuel injection (for easy start-up on cold days without having to fight with the carbs, and fuel efficiency)
*Liquid cooled (I guess I can live without this since it doesn't really get too hot in the lower-mainland, right?)
*Belt or shaft drive (I do not want to mess with chains and sprockets)
Unfortunately, the cheapest bikes I can find that fit the above are the Suzuki C/M50s (800cc) and the Kawa Vulcan 900cc. cheaper and smaller bikes are usually have chains, carbs and air-cooling.
I've read through the "So you've decided to buy your first bike, but don't know which" sticky, and it stated that 600cc+ sport bikes are really not for new riders. Am I right in assuming that this also applies to cruisers? If so, I'm going to have to go with something else.
If anyone knows of a cheaper/smaller bike that meets the above requirements, please let me know.
While I was at modern, Murray was chewing out this girl for wanting to buy a large first bike, telling her to go with a 250cc Marauder. If the 800/900cc bikes are unsuitable for new riders, then I guess I'll have to compromise a bit. My second choices are the Suzuki s40 Savage 650cc, and the Vulcan 500cc.
The problems with these two are that the s40 is single-piston air-cooled, and the Vulcan has chain drive. What would be a better compromise - having a single piston air-cooled engine, or chain drive?
Or am I completely crazy and should go for a 250cc carbed, chained bike?
Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks
