Here's another introductory-cautionary tale.
Riding home at night after dropping by my parent's place for my mother's birthday (!), I struck a sedan after the car in front of it slammed on its brakes. I hit the rear of the car on the right side and catapulted onto the curb, between two sign posts. Paramedics attended, and were somewhat incredulous when I told them that my largest problem was my thumb. I limped out of the hospital that night mostly due to a finely honed sense of luck.
I don't have collision, so I'll be paying for the damages. The bike is unfaired but the front end was tweaked which means I'm out around $2k, not including damage to the other guy's car.
I'm convinced ABS brakes would have reduced the severity or avoided the incident all together.
Other salient points: I attended a novice and then advanced riding school, and have been to a couple of track days in three years of riding, and I'm not an idiot.
Ride safe, hug your mom.
