Let me just start by saying, I'm not dissing anyone's choice to purchase a 1000cc+ motorcycle. In fact, I'd probably have one right now too if I could afford it.
Logically evaluating the pros and cons...why would anyone ever buy a supersport larger than 600 cubic cm?
On the one hand, you have people that buy a 1000 for the street and a 600 for the track. Their reasoning being that they don't want to take their 1000 on the track because it's too powerful. They feel more comfortable throwing a 600 around on the track, because the power of the 1000 can be a bit too much to handle...fear of the rear-end kicking out, not being able to get on the power early enough, etc.
On the other hand, you hear people say that the power of a 1000 is really useless on the street, and there's no point in having one unless you use it on the track. Where do you get the opportunity to exploit 140hp on the street? Almost no where. Maybe on a few long straights out in the backroads somewhere...but even litre bike owners say that the twisties are still the fun parts.
So what's more fun in the twisties? It's regarded by almost everyone that small light bikes, like 600s, are more fun to throw around in the twisty bits. Although bikes like the G1K are pretty much at 600 weight these days. Sure you have to shift gears more on a 600...but if you don't like shifting, you should probably go buy yourself an automatic car, shouldn't you?
So where's the appeal of the 1000cc machine? There's more power, but where do you use it? It's easier to wheelie, if you're into that stuff...but it's still more impressive if you can pull that off on a 600.
So just looking at this from a one-sided purist's point of view, here are the reasons why people might want to buy big bikes:
- Poser value (I'm an admitted poser myself)
- To be different (eveyone owns a 600)
- To just have the power (but do you use it?)
- It's more fun (really?)
- To impress others (watch me pass you on my 600 )
- 600 is too slow (you mean your abilities surpass the bike's potential?)
So I'd like to know...what are your thoughts?
Let me just reiterate...I'm not hating on 1000cc owners here. Like I said, I hope to have a big bike when I can afford one...but until then I'm stuck on a 600.
I'd just like to know...what made you buy your litre bike?
