As wonderful as he was as an actor, he was probably an even better human being!

A sad day in racing today, the loss of a true legend.
A very sad day indeed

This brings back a memory I have of one year at the Molson Indy in Toronto when I was a Paul Tracy fan. I scored VIP tickets with an all-access to the Pit Lanes during practice. I had been hoping for a Paul Tracy autograph to go along with my sports/autograph memorabilia collection. (Note Paul Newman and Paul Tracy have the same first name...this is important to the story.)
Paul Tracy was racing for Newman-Haas this particular year (as in 1/2 team owner is Paul Newman). It was getting near the end of qualifying and practice and Paul Tracy pulls into the pit lane in his Texaco sponsored Indy Car and gets out and talks to his team. He is now just 20 feet away but over the 2 foot high pit wall (a no-go zone for anyone but pit crew). I wait patiently for Paul Tracy to walk past. I wait and I wait.
About 10 minutes later, along comes...TA DAAAA....Paul Newman. So, I think, "Hmmmm, heres the team owner, he could get me Paul Tracy's autograph". Woot!
So I politely say to Paul Newman, "Excuse me, do you think I could get Paul's autograph?" as I gestured towards Paul Tracy just a few feet away.
Paul Newman looked at me with a scowl and barks "I'm on vaction, I don't sign autographs!!!".
Recongnizing the confusion and feeling bad that I may have put him out, I apologetically say, "Uh, no, sorry, I meant Paul Tracy's autograph."
Then, in an insulted tone he snaps back to me, "Grmmmph! I dunno, you'll have to ask him yourself!!!" and he stormed off.
I turned to my wife and cousin, who were behind me, jaws hanging open and my wife says, "Uh, you know, you just insulted Paul Newman?"
Incidentally, Paul Tracy jumped onto a golf cart and was whisked away to the team trailers. I wouldn't get his autograph until a year later.
Thanks for the memories and my, um, "brush with greatness" Paul (Newman).
May you rest in peace and if there's a racing series up there, I hope you're a part of it.

I watched "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" just a few days ago. Newman is in it along with Liz Taylor and Burl Ives. Sounds like a stinker, right? Well you'd be wrong. Fuggin' brilliant script by Tennessee Williams. You want to see Newman and the others in a really, really good film, rent it.
Cool Hand Luke. Just awesome.
RIP Mr. Newman.
Bart: What's Santa's Little Helper doing to that dog? Looks like he's trying to jump over, but he can't quite make it.
