Yep, there was honest to God racing at Active Mountain in Merritt this afternoon – OK, it was not a road race but it was very cool to see the BC leg of the Canadian Rally Championship stage a special spectator stage of the Pacific Forest Rally on the Active Mountain property.
I was visiting friends in Merritt today and decided to go to Active Mountain after lunch. I also checked out a later dusk stage north of Merritt. For those who haven’t been there, the Active Mountain property is adjacent to the Music Festival property (not sure if the music festival site is part of Active Mtn?). I spoke to the Chief Race Marshall at the rally (who seems to know what is going on in the area) and he thought all plans to build a track have been shelved, as has the real estate component. He reminded me at one time they were trying to attract interest from Nascar, which seems really far fetched these days. He said the owners of Active Mtn appreciate the small amount of money the rally pays to use the site – he got the impression they have no money to develop the site at all. Given the current economic environment, that won’t change soon.
Sure is a nice piece of property though – there are numerous areas to lay out a track with elevation changes and…. you can always dream, eh? It took the cars about a minute and a half to descend down to river level and come back up to the plateau.
I had my camera and snapped a couple of shots:

It is astounding to see (and hear) the 400hp open class cars being tossed around – truly amazing car control:
