Okay, first off let me introduce myself, since this is my first post. My name is Stefan, im from the Okanagan. Im 20 and am looking to get into the scene. Originally, a couple years back, I wanted a Sportbike. My father, who used to ride but doesn't anymore, told me to get some years regular driving experience first, I agreed and am glad I did, otherwise i would probably be just another statistic and ICBC would have 1 more totaled sport in their yard. I have seen many people my age kill them selves on R6s and RRs in the past couple years that i really dont even want a Sport bike anymore (plus im not a fan of the riding position). However i do now really want to start riding, and am looking at buying a new Street sometime the next month.
So now thats out of the way i need the forums opinion on what they think would be a better bike. Im looking at the 09 650r and the 09 Monster 696
As far as looks, im much more a fan of the 650r, since it does have the full fairings and sportbike style, Not saying the Monster is ugly, because its really not at all (however i think a dual headlamp conversion would make it look even better) But really i know its way more than just about looks
I havent yet sat on a 650, just a 250, Im going to check out a 650 in vernon on Friday, but i have sat on the Monster, and damn its comforatable. Im 6'1, and didnt feel cramped like i thought I would.
I dont know a whole lot about Ducatis, and am not sure what the cost of maintaining the 696 would be. The salesmen told me they recommend 12k service intervals. I can already guess its going to cost a fairbit more to maintain the Monster than the Ninja (being L twin vs Parallel twin, plus the design of the 650 Transmission i hear is quite simple) And the 'air cooled' Ducati does worry me a bit, can that lead to problems down the road? (since I plan on keeping the bike for quite a while)
Im sure the Ducati is a better bike overall, Everything i read shows that it has better brakes, suspension, motor. Its considerably lighter than the 650R (and i love light, im 6'1 and 135lb, so theres not a whole lot of muscle there) and though nowhere is the Ninjas HP listed im guessing the 696s 80hp probably trumps the ninja there to. But im not really worried about power (since, 135lb, neither bikes will notice im even on them)
The Ducati warrenty seems alot better than the Kawasaki warrenty as well (2years, vs 1 year)
So the Ducati is obviously the better bike, but which is the better Value. Is the 696 $3,000 better than the 650r, and worth the extra cost of maintanence?
Sorry for the long winded first post, I just cant decide between the two.
PS. If Mr. Kumagai from Southwest Motorrad in Kelowna is a member on this board i would just like to say Thank You so much for taking the time to help me today. Being a young guy (and I know I look even younger than I am) I was not expecting that level of service walking into a Ducati/Triumph shop. You were extremely helpful and That means alot.
