My friend was on Alberni Street near Denman at around 1:40pm. He was returning from after meeting a friend for coffee and was walking down the street with his earphones on. All of a sudden, someone came from behind and had him in a headlock. There were two of them.
At first, he thought it was someone he knew fooling around with him until the person holding him demanded that he hand over his leather biker jacket and money. My friend said he was stunned at what was happening and couldn't believe that he was being mugged in broad daylight. Out of desperation, he lifted his attacker and threw him to the ground. The other mugger lunged at him. My friend said he thought he was outnumbered and in trouble if the person grabbed him and the other person was able to get back up.
Luckily, the person coming at him slipped on the ice and ended up on his hands and knees right in front of my friend. This is when my friend kicked him right in the mouth with his steel-toed boot. He said he saw blood.
With one person out of the action, he turned his attention to the other attacker and gave him a few hard kicks in the ribs. He said that he actually felt a rib give away so he stopped and took off.
My friend didn't want to stay behind because he was worried that he might get into trouble for seriously injuring these two. He said that when he reached the end of the block, he looked back and saw that these two guys were still on the ground.
What do you guys think... should he have reported this to the police or is he correct in thinking that he could get sued for injuring these two?
He believes that he was targeted because the two mistook him for one of the Asian foreign exchange students in the area and would make an easy target since they have a reputation for being passive. Also, he was obviously not fully aware of his surroundings because he had his earphones on.
Be careful people... this mugging attempt took place in the West End in broad daylight...
