I live in a condo downtown, with a gigantic parkade underneath. 6 levels, and it's shared by 3 towers. Approximately 1000 spaces I'd say.
The parkade is designed with a circular ramp that winds from top to bottom. Kind of like a corkscrew.
There are drivers who don't pay attention and drive up and down the ramp right in the middle of the road, which is scary when you come around the corner and you're facing head to head with some other car. The whole thing is basically one blind corner.
Within a few weeks, the strata installed circular mirrors so you could see around the corners. Big improvement, but a few drivers still couldn't remember to keep right.
I have been hoping they would paint a line down the middle of the ramp to solve the problem. Back in November, they did. Huzzah. Problem solved.
But then in December, they also decided to install speed bumps. This is the problem.
These are the tall ones that bolt to the concrete. Each one is about as high as a curb. There are no rounded corners to speak of,
And they went ridiculously overboard. From the parkade entrance to where my parking spot is, I have to navigate 13 of these curbs. 13 going in. 13 going out. There is one every 20 feet. For those who park below me, they have to deal with even more of them.
To say this is creating problems for me is an understatement.
As for my car, it's lowered. It has stiff suspension and low ground clearance. Before you say this is my own fault, I've had a lowered car for 3 years. I know how to drive it. It's still high enough that it is used as a daily driver. I don't use low profile tires. No problems going anywhere. Until now.
I am forced to literally inch over each bump, riding the brakes going down and slipping the clutch going up. Takes me about 5 minutes going in and 5 minutes going out. The wear and tear these are causing each day on the whole car is a nightmare. It's only a matter time before it ends up in the shop.
I don't have a bike at the moment (sold it when I moved here) but was looking at a gixxer for this upcoming season. I imagine what it will be like trying to ride in and out of the parkade. There is a 10 inch gap between the two bumps you could squeeze a bike through, but then you're facing oncoming traffic head on. And remember the whole thing is one large blind corner. No thank you.
There has been a lot of negative reaction from the residents. Notices get posted on the bulletin board occasionally from people who are upset. They get taken down pretty quickly. Apparently a stack of written complaints has been filed. A petition was put up on the wall, but was also quickly taken down. One person even went through the whole parkade leaving flyers on all the cars, telling people to send in their complaints.
Of course, those without cars, and those with big SUVs, can't figure out why people are complaining. They view it as a bunch of whiners.
Last week, a note went up in the elevator saying "Strata Council is aware of the concerns. We didn't intend to make the residents upset. We only care about safety. We are investigating and will get back to you shortly".
I am skeptical. I'm sure this whole project cost a lot of money and they won't easily just decide to remove them all.
Anyways, my life has been turned upside down over these things. To say that I value my car is an understatement, and the cringing feeling each time I have to enter and exit the parkade is starting to wear thin.
Yesterday I found a mudflap ripped off a VW lying in the middle of the ramp.
Anyways, I just thought I'd use this forum as a way of venting. If anyone has any suggestions for me, i'd appreciate it.
