After all the snow and cold and blah blah blah I went out to see if I could get my bike started for the very first time since I bought it a few weeks ago. Sure enough, nothing.. as was the case 2 hrs after I bought it from the guy. Anyways, any hostilities aside... cooled down with the -10 weather and 3 ft of snow. Decided to test out my mechanical skillz...
Besides being happy to be able to respond to "what did you do this weekend?" with "I spent Sunday watching some football and a few hours working on my bike", the results were good. Ripped off the side fairing, after hitting up Can Tire for a trickle charger. Battery fully charged, still nada. Tested solenoid connection, that wasn't it. Followed cables to starter... decided to whack on in a few times to see if that'd giver a go. Sure enough, to immediate elation, the bitch started right up. Tried the whacking method when I first got it, but I think it was just too cold or something.
SO, she's started. Took her for an uninsured rip up and down the street to the dismay of my neighbors I'm sure. So that was Sunday.
Monday, run straight to Meg and Fitz - pick up my insurance for the Year. Cost me 1019 bucks, not bad for non-private coverage I'd say.
Get home.. first thing, roll in the hay with the gf, second, gear up, hit the streets for my first ride on my new/used bike with a smile on my face.
Cruise around for an hour loving life. Decide to pull over and take a leek and check out the brightness of the integrated signals (ps, they suck, any tips on getting brighter ones or making them more visible... can't even tell I signal). Start bike back up and head to buddies to show him the new wheels.
Get there, turn it off, get him outside, show him the goods. Start it up, he revs it a few times.. gets a chubby obviously haha and kill it again. Two mins later, go to start it... NOTHING. At least this time the engine is trying to turn over. But the bike wont start...tried 4 or 5 times. FAWK! Steal his car, rip home, grab the trickle charger and tell the gf to follow with the cover just in case it wont start.
Get back, decide to try bike for the hell of it, sure enough, starts right the fuck up. I just laugh. Decide to turn it off again just to see, sure enough, wont start again. So, I plug it in. Starts no problem hooked up, so I charge it a bit, pack up the crap, send gf off to get subway and meet me at home. She takes off, I pop it into first.. thing DIES! is what I'm thinking. Call her, get her to come back again lol
This time, at least I got a sub to eat while we sit in her little mx3 watching my bike charge. I charge it for a good 20-30 mins and decide to start the damn thing and just see if I can get it into first and get it home. Sure enough, it goes into gear. So she FOLLOWS me this time. Riding was fine, no stalls no nothing.
Home at last, or so I thought. I try to start it after I parked it.. sure enough, as expected, nothing. So I plug it in to the trickle charger and just leave it.
Take off all my gear.. can't find my cell phone or insurance papers. AHHHH
Call my phone, nope. Call my friend, sure enough, left it in the parking lot at his place... but he can't find the papers. So, I drive over AGAIN, to go get my phone and look around for the papers. Sure enough, they were laying between a couple cars in the parking lot. YAY.
So, get home... for the final time. The bike took a while, but it did eventually get back to full charge. Tried to kill it and start it 4 times or so. Worked fine.
So, in the end. I am thinking it's maybe the alternator that is gone on it. I'm going to try a couple tests when I get home. Apparently if I pull off one of the connections and it dies.. alternator is toast. If it stays on, it's fine.
The starter.. which was the original problem, seems to be okay as the bike tries to turn over all the time now. Except when there is pretty much no juice in the battery and it makes a really fast clickclickclickclickclick near the battery.
ANYWAYS, bike is fully charged. In the carport, waiting for day 2 of riding ahah
Hope you enjoyed this little saga. Gotta love having nothing to do at work. CHIA? lol
