So, I'm reading the BCSB thread about adopting cats, and I see that it costs $175 to adopt one these days. My family never paid for a pet, but we always had several at any given time. The first dog came with the house, the next few were strays that found their way onto our property and never left. One cat was a rescue job on the side of the road, one cat was a barn cat that just appeared, 5 more cats appeared because the barn cat was not spayed in time, and so on...
Point being, I was surprised to learn that the going rate to adopt a cat was $175. In fact, I'm not sure I would pay $175 for a cat's vet bill. (I've never been faced with this choice.) I would, however, pay that and more for a dog's vet bill. I know people who have paid thousands for their cat's insulin shots, hip surgery, pet-psychologists, and all sorts of expenses that I simply would not have entertained. Call it my financial pet-hierarchy.
So, how much would YOU spend on a cat's vet bill?
