I recently got back from an 18 day trip to the Philippines. it was amazing adventure. Quite sad really such a poor culture that really trying to make the best of it.
Botangas was a small city south of Manila about 2 hrs
1 Canadian dollar = 36 peso's
We were watching a house being built with Shovels, brick blocks, re bar, and cement.. no machines of any kind..not even a cement mixer
I asked out of curiosity how much a worker would make a day, hard labor
200 peso's = 5.55 Canadian a day
gas is 93 cents Canadian a litre, everything is virtually the same pricing as here, except for food
their main staple is rice, plate full of rice and small amounts of meat.
Roosters get treated better there than dogs, as they are used for income in cock fighting
Sure made me appreciate what I have here !!
Jeepnees were used as Taxis, very low ceilings. I felt like a giant in Gulliver's travels there and the only white guy seen in Botangas
I took a few pictures of bikes as that was my interest so I'll post them up, the streets are small and poorly built
There were no bikes great than 400 cc's I didn't see too many most were 125 cc's and 175 cc bikes were used for taxis called trikes
Most people owned bikes.. if there were cars on the road these folks worked elsewhere on ships or in the States, Australia, leaving family's for 3 months at a time
they carried everything including entire families on bikes as you will see
Helmets appeared to be options, most guy's wore helmets, girls did not, never asked why
Mods on bikes seemed to be prevalent, the smaller the tire the hotter it looked , apparently
anyway here is some pictures:
