Hi all, have been nearly bikeless for 2 years and am in the process of picking one up. My options so far are an 02 Duc 748 (which is my favorite design ever), an 04 R6and an 01 RC51.
The Duc is in great shape, but I've read so many horror stories about flaking rockers, failed cam belts and shim replacements that I'm a bit worried about taking it on in a place without a properly licensed/trained Ducati mechanic and parts.
The 04 R6 grabs my brain as it's nice and nimble, a good size for around town and the twisties, and very much what I'm used to. But it's not getting my heart...
I've always been intrigued by the RC51 and it's one of those bikes that I've got on my list to own. I've found an SP1 a town over and am planning to check it out sometime in the next week. What I'm a bit concerned about is the weight and the handling as I haven't actually ridden one yet. I've ridden a friend's TLR before, and didn't like the feel; it had really slow turn in and I had to really push on the bars to get a response. As an RC51 owner/rider, how is the handling and turn-in feel compared to a Japanese inline 4 600/750, the TLR or other bikes you can compare to?
Also, what should I be looking out for on a used SP1? Any particular issues or problems you notice cropping up on your bike? I have read about the twitchy fuel injection and gearing issues, but more reliability based.
Here's a pic of the bike I'm going to check out.
