With a 3 day weekend, a few bucks in my jeans, and a decent weather forecast, I decided to go riding. Seeing as I`ve spent very little of my 12 years in BC, on the Island, it seemed like a good bet. I set course for Nanaimo, then Campbell River, and into Gold River for day 1.
Arrived at Horseshoe Bay at 10:27, and got loaded onto the 10:30 ferry. They held the boat for me! Not bad for a long weekend. There are some advantages to motorcycles!
Once off the ferry, I hit the Old Island Highway north, towards Qualicum Beach. Having never been there, decided to dismount for a quick stop, and a photo op.
Left Qualicum Beach, heading north, enjoying a nice relaxed ride. I was coming into Miracle Beach, and was getting sick of an overly aggressive driver in a Pathfinder. I decided to explore the side road to Miracle Beach, and let jackass run ahead of me. There really is nothing down the road to M Beach, I was disappointed. Oh well....
On the way back to Highway 19A, the bike started to run poorly, like it was running out of gas. Not sure what to make of it, I decided to press on until I had a good place to pull over. I didn`t make it far. Stopped at the stop sign, and immediately saw a ton of smoke pouring out of the bike! Flipped my visor to take a quick smell, and shut it off. It was GAS! Absolutely pissing out of the bottom of the fuel petcock, all over the engine, exhaust, and everything else. I grabbed my luggage, and waited for the flames. Luckily, none came. Pushed it across the road, swearing up a storm, and dug in for a repair. Fuel hose had popped off the fuel petcock. Had to lift the tank, and re-install it. I was kinda pissed, because I had the bike serviced the DAY BEFORE!
Got the leak stopped, and headed for the closest gas station. If my mechanic reads this, you owe me a tank of gas!!!!
Carried on north, stopping in Campbell River to make sure my repair was doing ok. It was, so I was pleased. Parked beside a random Triumph, missing its plastic. Just thought it was a cool looking bike.
Once into Campbell River, I topped off the tank again, and headed for Gold River. Thats where the fun began. For those who haven`t been on this road, do it NOW! I mean it, NOW! Despite being a long weekend, I had ZERO traffic, ZERO cops, and perfect weather. 88km of twisting, winding, turning, elevation changing roads with some breathtaking scenery. Few small bumps on the pavement, but nothing to worry about. I stopped for a leg stretch at Strathcona Dam, and had to do some dual sporting to get down there. Was a cool side trip.
View from the dam.
There is a sign that says Absolutely NO Parking on Dam.
Left the dam, and headed into Gold River, the last few km. STarted raining just a bit, within 5 minutes of town. Perfect timing. Checked into the Ridge Motor Inn, and rode across to my room.
As I pulled into my parking spot, I noticed a KTM 950 Adventure a couple rooms over. Shut my bike down, and was immediately greeted by the owner, who stuck his head out, and yelled at me `Damn noisy bikers`. He promptly offered me a scotch, which was most welcome. For anyone in Victoria, it was Dave from Action Motorcycles in Vic. Super nice guy, we shared some scotch, and wandered to the pub for a burger and beer. Met another rider there, on a K1200LT. Nice guys, pleasant evening.
