I have used a 2007 DR650 for the last few seasons for my grocery getter and overall I've been pretty happy with it but lately I've been thinking about changing bikes.
Things I really like about it:
It's simple - forest gump simple - easy to maintain, reliable, affordable
Tank capacity is easy to upgrade from stock - range is a really big deal on some of rides I do
Smooth - sure it's a dirt bike and it's a windy and flexy ride but otherwise it runs and rides like a street bike on the pavement; it's a comfy couch compared to a real dirt bike
I've taken it on long, remote rides and it's never let me down or even hinted that it would. I'm confident it can continue to get the job done in the mean time.
Things that are making me think it's time to change:
It's slow. It could be worse and it has plenty of power for most dirt/street situations but I like more, about 50% more would be great. The displacement is somewhat deceptive sometimes. It's a very simple low-tech motor that can really only point fingers and laugh at a Harley.
The chassis is heavy and dated. The fork design must be at least 20 years old. If you find yourself in the loose terrain, whoops, hills, it's a lot of work! I'll give it to ya that rider is a lot of it but this bike never feels like it's doing me any favors when things get technical. It just feels big heavy and fights the whole way.
What are my options here? I need a street worthy bike, with great range, a proper ignition lock available (if not equipped) that will keep otherwise honest people from riding it away, rock solid reliability, and long maintenance intervals. I don't want to give up any of the good features of the DR.....just something updated and more capable.
Big Red Pig? I think Honda discontinued the XR650R and I'm not aware of a proper key kit for it. I'm a bit of a fan as a dirt bike but I don't know enough beyond that to say it's a definite possibility but the idea has me a little intrigued. Anyone care to comment?
Husqvarna TE610? It seems like a good fit and I know they've built some pretty good bikes. Can I get a huge tank kit for the new bikes? Is it something that I could ride to Inuvik on without any hesitations?
BMW G450X? - sounds awesome except fuel capacity really has me a little worried with this one.
BMW G650X? - same problem with a really small tank but still a contender
Lets hear some more suggestions too. Huseberg makes some interesting models but they don't seem to be the most reliable for what I want to do.
