I've come across a few posts recently about lubing chains.
My personal philosophy is that, since the chains are internally lubricated, hence the "o" or "x" rings, they only need to be cleaned.
So, I actually never use chain lubricant of any kind. I occasionally clean the chain and sprockets with WD-40, and always get 20,000 plus kilometers out of my chains. In fact I've got 24,000 kilometers on my current chain and sprockets and the way things look, I'll get another 15, 000 easy.
I always found lubing chains to be an annoying and messy affair, so now I don't.
BTW, O-rings do not get damaged by WD-40, as some conspiracy theorists suspect.
