So, after astounding a pile of people when I tell them that my old Gixxer has 156000km on it, they always ask how the engine is holding up. My answer has always been the same, until now.
Had it into EMS on Sunday for another issue, and decided to check valve clearance, and do a compression test. Valves were all fine, compression was looooooooooooow. 125 125 75 75 were the readings. She doesn't use much oil, and still pulls plenty hard, but obviously she is not a healthy old girl. Head looks great, cams like pretty, chain is fine, etc. No knocks, no bangs, just low compression.
So now I get to decide a course of action.
Option 1 - Find a low mileage used mill, bolt it in. Cheap, but not easy to find.
Option 2 - Thinking I may go stock pistons, leave the rest alone, and just do a budget refresh. Or even just hone and rings.
Option 3 - 1mm oversize pistons, 771cc, hotter cams, new valves and valve springs.
Option 4 - Complete teardown, 907 kit, hotter cams, full head rebuild, etc.
I know some of you will say Option 5 - Dump it and get a new bike. But that ain't gonna happen! I AM shopping for a new bike, but the old Gixxer will stay a loyal family member, with a fresh mill.
Not making it into a poll, cause i hate polls, and we have enough of them around here! But if you have any insight, feel free to post up.
All and all, I'd say 156000km is pretty damn good for a high strung sportbike engine. I am pleased.
