Does your family or GF continually ask where you are and where you've been while you're on a ride ? I don't like having to call home every night so I bought a Spot GPS locator. Quite cheap given the service that's provided. I got a factory special so the transmitter was free (normally $175 or so at London Drugs) with a one year service contract. The basic cost is about $100US IIRC and with an extra or two I think I paid around $150US.
The Spot pings the satellite every 10 minutes and transmits your location which can be viewed via Google maps. I've found that in some tight places, like the Fraser Canyon and Duffey Lake, not all of the pings get out.
Anyway, I'm just heading out for a ride. Not sure where exactly. A bit north and a bit east. If you'd like to vicariously ride along and see how Find Me Spot works, here's a link to the map with the little footprints indicating the location.
