I have a week of vacation this upcoming week and I was planning on spending 6 days riding down to and around California. The only problem is that I don't really know what route I should take. I was planning on doing the coast all the way down and up through central/eastern Oregon and Washington on the way back. I've heard mixed reviews of the coast and was told that the weather can be iffy, even in the summer. Is it worth my time to use that as my main plan on the way down or are there more than enough worthwhile roads inland that I can choose a different route in each direction?
I've read silverD and bandito's reports so far and I see a few of the highways that I should incorporate while in Cali such as 299, 36, 101, and this Nevada City-Quincy-Oroville-Chico run that bandito detailed http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sour...,1.234589&z=10
Having never even been to Oregon or California, on a bike or not, I probably want to be a bit touristy and go all the way down to San Fransisco just to say I did. I'm not sure what I'd do there or if there's fun roads that far South and close to the major cities. I've pretty much got nothing to do but wake up and ride.
Riding solo on my 600RR and prepared to do 800-1000km+ days (whatever is necessary to get the most out of my time). I don't have GPS (unless someone wants to lend me one ) and will be sleeping in hotels as I don't want to camp solo. I'd like to take very few detours while in Washington (skipping 101 to 112 and the penninsula), because those can be saved for day/shorter trips.
Here's a rough outline of the trip http://maps.google.ca/maps?f=d&sourc...,19.753418&z=6
