So my friends 2008 KLR 650 engine is now blown...
He took his bike in for the 12k major service and had his valves adjusted etc last month. We went for a ride down to washington/oregon and this where it happened. Day 2 we did about 600km's, pretty hard ridding. Day 3 we were on our way back into Yakima after being in southern Oregon on some great roads and on the Interstate his engine just stopped, he pulled over. We looked at the bike and it was low on oil. I went to the gas station and picked up 2 liters of oil, came back put them both in and it finally registered on the meter to the full line. We went to start the bike never started again.
We inspected the bike and there was a small amount of oil coming from the upper gasket but not 2L worth or at least we didnt think so. No one noticed him blowing blue smoke that day or the previous day. In the end he got the bike towed home and took it to the same shop that did the service. They have determined that the top end of the engine is finished. My friend is not very technically inclined so he didnt list what was wrong they just said hes going to have to replace the engine as there are multiple components wrecked.
The shop told him that the KLR COULD BURN 2L of oil under heavy riding conditions when he said that maybe there was a leak in the gasket after having the valves adjusted as we could see some oil. I find this hard to believe that the bike could burn 2L of oil in 1200km. I had a 02 KLR and never changed the oil for a season which was close to 6k's.
Hopefully tomorrow he goes to pick up the bike to find out what exactly is wrong but my question is:
1) Can it burn 2 L of oil in 1200km's without a leak or even to subject to a small leak.
2) Anyone know where he can pick up a used 08+ KLR engine.
