I've been reading everything I can on this board, but I thought I'd ask for opinions anyway. I have 2 weeks vacation coming up in August, which should give me roughly 16 days of riding before I have to get back to work. I'm planning on going from Vancouver to San Diego (solo), and I want to stick to the coast the whole way down.
Not sure what I'd want to do on the way back up though; probably a variation of the coastal highway plus some random ventures inland. Any tips on cool places to check out on the way up, which may be a ways off the coast?
Here's a rough route I have planned in google maps:
Places I want to check out on the way down:
-Basically anything that looks cool while I'm on the PCH. I've heard good things about the following:
-Fort Bragg (I'm planning on taking the 101 to Willits, then the 20 west to Fort Bragg
-Mission Beach (San Diego)
Any tips for places to check out on the way up?
-any cool roads in LA? (Mullholland?)
-stuff off the coast that would be really cool?
-perhaps even a return trip via Las Vegas/Nevada? Although the thought of riding through the desert at this time of year is daunting...
I'm guessing 600KM per day is reasonable if I want to stop in towns and take it easy. That gives me 4.5 days to get down. Does that sound realistic to people?
I'm riding a 2008 Ninja 650R, with Battlax BT020 tires. They'll have roughly 7300K's on them by the time I start the trip, and they look perfectly fine. Will it be enough to make the round trip? What kind of wear do people get on these kinds of tires?
I'm assuming the whole way down will be hot as hell. Do I need to worry about weird spots where it gets really cold?
Has anyone camped the whole way down? How easy is it to find camping spots and how safe is it?
Doing a pure mileage calculation, I'm looking at spending only $150 to $165 on gas the whole way down. One way trip is 2724KM and my experience is that I fill up roughly 13-14 dollars every 250KM (in the city; I'm expecting better highway mileage). Rounding up, that's 11 fill-ups at 15 dollars, so $165 dollars. That's a lot cheaper than I expected. Is that generally the kind of mileage you can expect?
What else should I bring?
I'm planning on bringing the following:
-toolkit that comes with bike, air gauge, flashlight
-tire plugs, air pump/CO2 canisters
-cotter pins, tape measure, torque wrench, side cutters (stuff for chain adjustments)
-chain lube, kerosene (for cleaning), rags
What can I expect to spend every day? I want to camp a few nights too (I don't think I'll be strong enough to camp every night though). I have family I'll be staying with in San Diego, so my lodging expenses there will be zero. I'll probably spend only 2 or 3 nights there, depending on how long it takes me to get there. What have people who've done this trip found they were spending per day?
If I called up BCAA, what should I ask them for?
(health insurance is covered by my employer, so I should be fine there)
Any tips or ideas on any subject above or anything I've left out would be greatly appreciated! Especially by people who've done the trip before.
