So, I'm riding South on 5A from Kamloops to Merritt when I catch up to a van doing 20k over the limit. I follow for a while at a safe distance (2 sec rule) and the van pulls over into the gravel shoulder and waves me past. I pass doing about 40k over and look over to give a 'thanks' wave and it is a uniformed RCMP driving. At this point I figure I'm screwed, but the damage is already done so I continue on expecting to be pulled over but nothing happens. I'm gassing up in Merritt 15 minutes later when the van pulls in to the station and proceeds to the adjacent Timmies (yup, it's a cop). This was not the first time a car had pulled into the gravel to let me past, over a two day ride I had experienced this phenomenom several times riding in the Cariboo region. Imagine, a driver sees a faster vehicle approaching and politely moves out of the way. Moral of the story: The proportion of assholes to the general population is inversely related to your proximity to Vancouver.
