I was asked by several interested members to write up a trip & ride report from my recent adventure to Australia - a trip that started in Melbourne, with a visit to the MotoGP at Phillip Island, a 10 day ride around the states of Victoria and New South Wales (NSW) and then a ride day on the Phillip Island GP track with the California Superbike School.
This was a “bucket list” trip for me - I’ve thought about doing this for 3 years (after watching the MotoGP on TV and the riders seemingly riding into the ocean on the front straight) and I finally made it happen in 2009. While I organized it I didn’t realize how really great this trip was going to be. If you are thinking about a MotoGP visit Phillip Island is the track to visit - it’s a relaxed atmosphere, intimate (you can meet the riders) and of course, it’s the best track in the series (IMO of course).
I am going to write this report as I get to each day of the trip. I'd like to add links to maps as well so you know where these great riding roads are. I've uploaded some videos to YouTube & I will like them here - sorry... they're all raw footage (nothing fancy).
The trip to down under:
On October 11th I hopped a jet in Seattle (I saved $500 by driving to Seattle versus leaving Vancouver so figured it was worth it). Qantas is a great airline and in 21 hours total (Seattle - L.A. - Melbourne) I had landed at the Tullamarine Airport in Melbourne on October 13th. In Australia they include their GST (of 10% in the cost of everything so things seemed kind of expensive to me but I guess they were about the same as our cost + GST/PST.

Here are some pictures of Melbourne area. Nice city with the Yarra River running through it. They have an area that they’re just developing that’s similar to our Coal Harbour area. I stayed in the Lygon Street area which is an Italian area of town - definitely the best gelato I’ve ever had served by a young Italian who could have been Valentino Rossi‘s twin.
