Who is the bike show for?
As an experienced rider it feels like the bike show is not targeted to satisfy what I need out of a motorcycle trade show. I don't mean to sound selfish however every year I walk out of the show and in to the parking lot feeling somewhat unsatisfied.
Essentially, I can't get anything out of the bike show that I couldn't get from spending an afternoon visiting 3 or 4 local motorcycle shops. Yesterday I saw 2 motorcycles that I hadn't seen before - the new BMW S1000rr and the new VFR. In reality, I could have gone to either of the local BMW dealerships and seen the S1000rr prior to going to the show. So the VFR was the only unique experience of the bike show. 1 motorcycle.
Sure there was custom bikes but most of the custom bikes on display I had already seen at previous bike shows or any of the local community custom bike shows.
Gear. There was no unique gear at the bike show. As with motorcycles, all the gear on display was seemingly lifted off the showroom floor of the local bike shops and transplanted to the Tradex center.
Certainly there's entertainment to be enjoyed at the show like bike stunting (which I can watch from the back window of my studio in the downstairs parking lot on any given afternoon, my local parking lot is popular with stunters) and then maybe some local yokal band but there's no ceremonious unveiling of new products or models. Bummer.
It is enjoyable to be surrounded by motorcycles in the dead of a Canadian winter, it does get me excited for the upcoming season but otherwise it falls flat from lack of any sort of new experience with motorcycling.
So my question is what purpose does the bike show serve aside from being a flea market for local vendors?
