Hey everyone. I was wondering if anyone could give me any input on helmet legality in BC. I want to get a Japanese 'race' helmet for my everyday riding that meets Japanese safety standards (Japanese JIS T 8133, MFJ standard (Motorcycle Federation of Japan), and the FIM standard which means that the helmet is approved for World Superbike and MotoGP racing). These are all high standards to meet and easily compare or surpass DOT and SNELL ratings, however since this relatively new model is not distributed in any country other than Japan at the moment, it does not meet DOT or SNELL ratings as it hasn't been tested for them yet.
So my two questions for anyone in the know and our LEO's out there:
1. Is it illegal for me to be using this helmet whenever I'm out riding? And if so what are the consequences I'm looking at?
2. If I am to go down hard due to someone else being reckless and I am injured and want to take it to court with ICBC, could they void the claim due to me not wearing a DOT approved helmet? Is the helmet something police on crash site check or something like that?
Any help and opinions would be really appreciated! Thanks
