So I was on the phone with ICBC regarding the new rules because of the 06 CRF 450r I had:
If it doesn't have the Transport Canada decal from the factory certifying it for road use, it will be pulled off the road. It cannot be inspected to put it on the road either, they have the right to refuse insurance for on road applications. Apparently the problem is liability. The manufacturer says they're off road use only, so ICBC has no choice but to pull them or accept liability. They claim the bikes being registered was an oversight that came to light with the new ORV program that starts this June. All bikes must be register if used off private property now. You will be able to get plates for off road use only for logging roads, Crown land etc. Any crown land it is voluntary insurance but you need the registration done, you can have a plate and no insurance.
Off road bikes that have already been registered and inspected will not be grandfathered in under the new rules, even if it was done years ago. If it's off road only, those owners will be required to surrender the plate in the next little bit, probably June when all the new rules go into effect. The bike has to have the Transport Canada (my DRZ does) or a USA tag from DOT. If not you're getting pulled off the road.
If you bought a used dirt bike, you better check the VIN now to see if it was ever stolen, or you will be losing it once you have to plate it.
Here is how they are classifying dirt bikes now:
I asked about registering as a Modified vehicle, still a no go without TC or DOT certs.
I asked about U-bilt, and they say:
"U-bilt vehicle - For the purposes of registration, a u-bilt or homemade vehicle is a new motor vehicle that:
has been constructed by an individual or small company, and
is built from new or used parts."
Since the bikes have an assigned VIN, they do not qualify. If you built a frame yourself and bolted a bunch of shit to it, you would qualify apparently. I don't see anyone whipping up frames anytime soon.
Think this is all bullshit and won't happen?
I can't say to be honest, but I wouldn't be surprised after the precedent set out east.
I wonder if WR250X & DRZs on the market are about to take a jump in value?
