Just got back from 4 hours of fun at the border, some friends and I were on our way down to Portland to watch the Raptors play the Trailblazers. I just got my enhanced D.L last week and even went down to point roberts to pick up some parts for the bike on wednesday, no problems.
My friend are visiting from Ireland and had to show their passports before we crossed the border, we had to go inside to get them stamped. Once inside they have to fill out some forms and get fingerprinted, half hour later I see a guy come up to the girl serving us and pull her aside (chitter chatter ensues) they ask us to take a seat.
A while later they call me up to the desk and ask me if I have ever been arrested, I have and was honest with them (14 years ago in a previous life)
They them tell me I am being denied entry because of this, I was kind of choked because I went down to point roberts on wednesday to test out my new enhanced D.L and all was good, they tell me to take a seat again.
They call me into a back room to be photographed and fingerprinted.
We head back into Canada and have to go through another hour of B.S before getting clearance.
I get home and do some research and see if I can get a pardon, the U.S doesn't recognize Canadian pardons and I need a waiver of entry. I have to send the R.C.M.P $25 for an original copy of my criminal record, and $545 U.S for a filing fee along with a bunch of other documents and letters of references.
The moral of this thread is: don't get caught with your pants down or you'll take a $570 dildo in the ass. If you have ever been arrested or think you have, make 100% sure you're clear to go across the border before heading down there, I thought I was good.
Also if anyone knows of any loopholes or a way to ease the pain of paying out that kind of cash your advice would be appreciated.
