Cpl. Benjamin Monty Robinson, the RCMP officer charged with obstruction of justice in the 2008 death of motorcyclist Orion Hutchinson, has pleaded not guilty. He has elected for a trial before judge and jury in B.C. Supreme Court.
Robinson was not in Surrey Provincial Court Tuesday morning when the plea was entered; his lawyer entered the plea on his behalf.
Defence and Crown counsel set a date for a preliminary trial of four days starting April 18, 2011, in Surrey provincial court.
Hutchinson, a 21-year-old motorcyclist, was killed on Oct. 25, 2008, when Robinson’s Jeep crashed into Hutchinson’s motorcycle at a Tsawwassen intersection.
Delta police originally recommended Robinson face a charge of impaired driving causing death, but the attorney-general’s office decided to proceed with the lesser charge of obstruction of justice.
