Driving with an expired License
Anyone know what the consequences are if you are caught driving with an expired DL.
My DL expires today but I cannot renew it yet as I am waiting for a name change to come back from Victoria which should be within the next week. Is there a grace period? What happens if I drive and I'm caught?
Your advice is much appreciated.
i'd go renew my license right now and pay the renew fee... that way you at least have a permit to drive on while your new license is in the mail... then when your name change goes through, just show up there and get a name change... i believe you can also do it online? and they mail you a new license free of charge...
no point in driving without a license for a week imo...

No grace period. expired is expired. Believe it will qualify you for an instant $500~ fine and further penalties and restrictions.
In short, ICBC will bend you over and drill so deep they'll find daylight at the other end.
"I dread beyond all else the growth of the petty tyranny of restrictive legislation, the transference of disciplinary authority from the judiciary to the constabulary, the abandonment of every constitutional safeguard of individual liberty."
Thank you for the descriptive and very graphic rendition of ICBC tactics!!
But no need now, I just checked with my concierge and got my name change and had my DL renewed.
It is good that you got your licence renewed.
For the future, keep in mind that the fine for driving without a valid driver’s licence (expired drivers licence) is $138 and 3 points. In addition, your driver status will be flagged as being a vehicle impoundment candidate which means if you are caught without having a valid driver’s licence (expired drivers licence) the vehicle you are driving will be impounded for 30 days. This is under the Motor Vehicle Act.
ICBC has its own rules for dealing with unlicenced drivers.
