Hey I figure I can post this now since I'm not seething with rage as much as earlier today.
So some quick backstory, I live and work in North Vancouver in the lower lonsdale area. My office is literally 800m from my apartment building, I did ride my motorcycle to work for a bit this spring when I got it running again, but have since gone back to riding my bicycle to work, its just as fast and I don't have to gear up for a 2 min ride.
When riding my bicycle to work I don't wear a helmet. If I ride my bike for any real amount of time I'll usually throw on a helmet or at least think about it. Also most of the time when I'm going to work I ride on the sidewalk because there's really no pedestrians, I pass maybe 5 or 6 people on my way to work, and the road I live on (forbes ave, turns into esplande, is a truck route) has retarded drivers. I have seen at least 4 accidents right in front of my building and I haven't even lived there a year yet.
Today while riding home from work I see a police officer talking to some guy on the sidewalk, don't notice that he has a bicycle yet, its an unmarked car with its hazards on. I think for a few seconds if I should cross the street and keep riding, or just keep going. Check traffic, it'd be a while before I could cross so I decide to keep riding.
I'm going pretty slow as usual and as I approach the police the officer says "its your turn next, we're doing helmets today"
That's when I noticed the guy that was there had a bmx bike and was getting written up as well...
So I get a $30 fine for no helmet, which in my opinion is a BS law but the $30 isn't too bad, and a $100 fine for riding on the sidewalk, which in my opinion is also a BS law and a BS fine for it. There was literally nobody else on the sidewalk for the entire block except me and the other dude on a bike getting a ticket.
Anyway the officer finishes writing the ticket gives it to me and takes off, but I don't sign it where it says "recipients signature" saying that you received the ticket. He didn't ask me to or anything, just left
Is that something that can get you out of a ticket or does that even matter?
Also I'm going to dispute the riding on the sidewalk part as I honestly don't feel safe riding on the street up the hill to my house. What's the best way to do that, plead guilty but explain why?
oh yeah I asked why I was getting a no helmet ticket and the officer responded "because its under the motor vehicle act" I didn't realize the bicycle I was riding was motorized :P
Also the thought came into my mind to just ride away. I was right by a park where I know the paths around that area, there's also a pedestrian overpass that joins onto another park and I'm pretty sure I would have gotten away from them pretty easily, lots of stairs/ramps a few different ways to go. Would they have cared or pursued? they were already busy with another guy, there was 2 of them, but what would they have done?
In the end all that this encounter has done has made me not want to stop for the police if I'm on 2 wheels. I'm not going to start wearing a helmet to work and I'm still going to ride on the sidewalk to work.
Oh and the best part is as soon as they gave me the ticket and drove away I hopped on my bike and started riding home. Not 2 seconds later a RCMP car passed me and didn't even look my way...
