My friend recently noticed that there was an $8.xx "extra" tacked onto his insurance by ICBC for "Road safety including enhanced law enforcement". I checked mine and sure enough I was charged $4.39 for 3 month insurance for the same thing.
It works out to $17.56 per year per vehicle. In 2007 there were 3,852,365 licensed vehicles in the province. That is over $67.5 Million per year collected for "road safety" and "enhanced law enforcement".
Does anyone know how much ICBC pays the police? How is the money divided up amongst detachments or various police forces? What are the police supposed to do in exchange for this money? Do the police decide or does ICBC tell them what to do?
