... and they're worth every penny!
Some of you may remember I lowsided @ Mission on Canada Day last year. Seeing how I take my anniversaries very seriously, I did the same today. Except it wasn't at Mission, and instead of 70kph, I was doing... well, a lot. Done this same corner many, many times before, even at faster speeds... Went into the corner and half-way through I zoned out for a split second and ran a bit wide off my line, ended up crossing the white lane divider and the bike slid out from under me the second it touched that slippery devil.
After that it was a whole bunch of sliding, rolling, praying that I don't slam into the concrete barrier to my right (and guess what happened a second later?), and worrying about my bike.
I was on my feet the second I stopped - the bike was still sliding uphill with a massive spark show. I'd say I slid about 50 meters, and bounced off the concrete barrier sometime during the fun. The bike easily did twice the distance. I had to hike up to get to it!
Relaxed for 20 minutes to let the adrenaline wear off and talked shit with a couple that pulled over (awesome Australians!).
Looked the bike over and was amazed at how little damage there was. I was honestly expecting it to be completely destroyed when I walked up to it. Nope. Race rails and additional sliders did their job, and they did it damn well, too. Just a few scratches on the usual suspects (mirror, bar end, lever), a scratch on the stator cover (again, dammit!!), a few light scratches on the bottom fairing (which I didn't even see until I took the pictures with flash), a bent foot peg, rashed tail section fairing and completely destroyed spool slider. Not bad at all!
Rode the bike home and she purred like a kitten! I was planning on having the EMS docs do a quick medical on my bike before I left... now it looks like I may need to send it in for a serious rehab, lol!
On my end, I was wearing full A* leathers, A* SMX5 boots, Shift gauntlet gloves, Joe Rocket speedmaster back protector and the Shoei. I hit the concrete barrier with my right arm/shoulder, so that hurts quite a bit. The back took some serious hits, too; feeling a little sore/painful. Without my back protector I have a feeling I wouldn't be so lucky.
The leathers are basically torn to shit. Might be repairable, who knows...
I'm just happy that the bike is okay and this screw up won't mess up my plans to ride down to Cali at the end of this month!
Oh, on another lucky note, I happen to have a full set of new aftermarket plastics sitting in a box right behind me. Twoforfree sent me over a replacement set a little while ago (for the old set that I bought and was very unhappy with); these new fairings are actually considerably better and I've promised to do a review on them, so it looks like I finally have a real reason to install them!
Anyways, enough of my Tylenol3-induced drivel (thanks, nurse!) - on to the carnage!
The back side.
Front of jacket.
Back of the pants - right through to the "comfort" layer. That's my finger sticking out from the inside.
The bike. Click for high-res.
If you don't already have one, you better buy a set of race rails before your next tank of gas!! These are "B2 industries" rails and T-Rex sliders behind them.
There used to be a spool slider there! PS. My chain is cleaner than yours.
If you haven't gotten the point yet, wear your damn gear! Oh, and don't do stupid shit. Oh yeah, and don't put diesel in your v-strom!
