Has the Super / Hyper bike (1200+cc) category changed over the last few years? Currently the fastest bikes are not the biggest so what do large displacement sportbikes offer? Perhaps Hyper / Super Sportbikes should be considered Hyper-Sport Touring bikes.
Several years ago the busa, ZX and blackbird reigned as speed kings but now with the addition of the R1, the GSX-1, ZX1, CBR1, S1 a smaller displacement is outperforming the current range of superbikes (busa, ZX14, K13, VFR12). One reason for smaller bikes excelling is performance limitations imposed on super / hyper bikes.
The current range of superbikes are all capable of litre bike speeds with the trade-off of increased weight, comfortable ergos and better fuel range than their 1000cc counterparts. I am suggesting current superbikes are becoming increasing favorable to take on longer trips.
