So after July 1st, I was obviously expecting my usual purchases to go up by 7% such as coffee at *$'s (Starbucks.) After July 1st, I heard many people in line complaining about the amount and the employees said "yeah it's HST [big smile]."
The price was more than usual for me of course, but after a quick calculation in my head it immediately seemed higher than the expected increase, so I asked for a receipt this time which I never usually take.
Basically they are now charging 30 cents extra for the coffee, and then you get nailed with HST. They already raised the price by 30 cents on January 1st. Starfucks are a bunch of sneaky bastards....they purposefully increased the price on July 1st and are using the HST excuse to get away with it. What really pisses me off is that, to my knowledge, the HST is basically there to benefit the business, and they get to pocket the extra portion of the tax. So they were already going to benefit with HST, and now they're screwing the consumer even more.
I guess Gordo was wrong again (big surprise,) that the corporations would lower their prices so the consumer would win.
