2008 ZX-14 LSL Hypertouring Madness
Do you need the fastest sport touring motorcycle on Earth? Well, here she is, all ready to go. It's a 2008 Midnight Electric Blue ZX-14, you know the colour that looks midnight black under clouds and sparkly blue in the sunshine. This is a monster machine built for all day touring. Here are the details...
Power: Full TiForce exhaust, titanium from head to toe. This shaves about 35 lbs. off the stock bike, and together with a Power Commander III (with a very sweet custom map) results in somewhere around 185-190bhp at sea level. The power is smooooooooooooooth, no jerkiness and rips your frickin' arms off needless to say. The gearing is stock, but the bike comes with a -1 Zephyr front sprocket and a +1 Vortec rear sprocket (neither ever used) for when you need to get really, really stupid.
Touring: This bike has the full aluminum LSL kit, along with the biggest and highest Superbike bars that are made. Installation of this kit was a six month project and involved some very, very serious work. As part of the kit there are braided SS lines on the front, and everything fits, works, and works well. At full lock side to side the clutch/brake graze the windshield on top and leave just enough room for your hands on the tank. You cannot, and will not, put anything on this bike that offers more of a touring/standard seating position - period. This bike also has the standard heavy duty Buell modified aluminum drop pegs, they are as low as you can go with the rear brake and shifter adjusted accordingly. Together this is as much comfort as you can get short of a seat customized for your particular ass. Not pictured below but included with the bike is a Manta XL bag for the front (fits the ZX-14 tank perfectly) and a full triple set of Cortech sport bags for the rear (never used, sadly!)
Goodies: There is a full high end accessories harness installed through-out the bike, relayed and fused with top notch parts. I have three power leads to the front end, one of which is wired to the instrument panel for a radar detector (phone cord) already. cough. There is also a high end electric vest controller wired in under the seat. The power commander is installed to proper, solid leads and grounds and is installed tucked nicely into the dash and out of sight. The bike also has a very sweet MRA double bubble smoked windshield, looks fantastic and fits perfectly with the theme of the bike. On the bars I have dual shorty Gold Pazzo's, with brakes this good I have never needed more than 2 fingers and the clutch on the ZX-14 is as light and easy as they come. On the back end I have a very nice chopped tail that still gives you plenty of plate and won't attract the wrong attention, complete with LED lights and custom mounts for the signals.
Overall: Everything works - the windshield is fantastic and that is coming from someone who has tossed many 'touring' windshields in the garbage. The power is ridiculous, much crisper than stock without any of the jerkiness that some PC-III setups are plagued by. Converting the bike to a 'standard' worked amazingly well, you can sit quite comfortably with a straight back or you can tuck in and go berserk. It looks good and feels good, together with the MRA double bubble the airflow is perfect. The bike has a shade over 4000km on it, it is pretty much mint. It had a hard, smart break-in right from Burnaby Kawasaki down the HOV lane of the #1 - hard pulls in 12 minute sections with a cooldown between each one. Right after that it had an oil/filter change and has had one more oil change since. She still has the stock tires on, the rear is pretty much squared off from living where I do and I would go with some C2's or something when the time came. The TiForce is surprisingly quiet, you know it is there without being annoying - a nice growl compared to the virtually silent stock setup. I won't bother telling you the bike is fast - that is a given. The soft newbie low to mid that a stock ZX-14 has is gone, but it is still smooth. First and second gear, even with stock gearing, can be dangerous so you have to keep that in mind.
The Deal: Don't ask why I need to sell this thing - that's my business. Rest assured it isn't because there is a problem with the bike. I built this thing from scratch as the ultimate touring machine, with the capability to get around motorhomes on the highway "at will".
I am asking $8500 for this thing, and that is pretty much non-negotiable. I could list everything I put into this bike in dollar terms, but we all know that is meaningless in the big picture. Anyone who is interested in a bike of this level knows what has been put into it. The LSL kit was a gargantuan project that I would hesitate to do again, putting those extra big bars on made the job another order of magnitude more difficult than the already boggling task it entails. I can assure you, however, that 2 fully qualified millwrights spent the majority of a winter putting this together and every single aspect of it was done to spec and torqued to the last inch. I wouldn't rail through corners at full tilt on it myself otherwise...
I should mention that the bike is located up here in Houston BC, which is about 3 hours North of Prince George. Anyone interested can ask me anything they like or ask for any pictures of particular parts, etc. I am willing to truck this bike pretty much anywhere for the cost of my gas, as well.
