Just got back from a 5000 km trip to LA and back (10 days). The girl and I went down the I5 to Portland and then headed west to the coast. I've done most of the coast but I was missing the portion south of Monterey, CA to LA and this time I wanted to complete the missing section. Now that I've done it, I can say the I've done the whole coast route from top of Olympic peninsula in Washington to the Mexican/California border.
The weather along the coast was not the best (typical) but I was surprised how chilly it was. It went as low as 12 degrees C in Northern California. It wasn't until we got to Santa Barbara that the temperature was normal.
Because this was my girl's first time down this route, we took it easy as some of parts of the coast highway is very twisty. I loved it but she, not so much. If you ever decide to head to California, make sure you get to Leggett and take Highway 1 out to the coast. One of my favourite part of the PCH1: Nicely cambered and twisty.
