Hey all! Sorry my first post in the forums have to be about a broken piece!
I'm looking for some advice on fixing a cracked fairing. I searched around and saw the usual advice (epoxies, plastic welds, etc) but I don't fully understand where each applies, etc. (Sorry for beating a dead horse)
I'm riding a 2008 Ninja 650R, and have a crack on the left fairing (see attached picture). It's my first bike, so I'm not as interested in making it look "brand new" as just to get it neatly back together, decent looking, cheap, and useable. (I didn't drop the bike already! Guy who sold it to me managed to do this one)
So couple questions:
1) What would you guys suggest to fix this? I feel like an epoxy would be easiest/cheapest (DIY), any suggestions? I hear "Plastex" being thrown about, but no idea where to buy it from, and online seems to be pretty pricey (not to mention the site refuses to let me select a Canadian province...)
2) Leedham is sort of out of the question. He's a couple hours away by bus, and needs the fairing to be removed. The fairing is a huge PITA to get on/off, and now that it's off I'd almost prefer to just fix it, then put it back on.
3) Do I need to drill a small hole at the end of the crack, or if I epoxy it, will it not propogate?
4) Soldering iron "welds", stupid, or useful? Does it make it really ugly?
Any suggestions on dealing with this crack would be greatly appreciated!
Edit: If you know any good shops in the west end (kits) let me know too!
