I've been searching around for a first bike. I have had a motorcycle license since '92, but have only ridden in the third world (500cc Enfields and 150cc Honda's in India). I spend a lot of time on a mountain bike, including down-hilling and some casual XC racing.
Looking for something good for commuting that can still be used for the occasional longer distance tour, is fun! to ride but still decent to start on.
I narrowed the search to the Suzuki DRZ 400sm and the Husky SM 610/630. I have heard that the 450/510 Husky's, while having lower cc's, are really de-tuned race bikes and hence less suitable for a beginner or for regular road riding.
I found a new/ unused 2007 SM610 at a dealership in Edmonton for $8600+tax.
Q1: Is this a reasonable price for the bike? There was one that sold on here last month for ~$5250 with 3000km, but I can't find any for sale in Alberta / Eastern BC (I'm located in Canmore).
Q2: Any good reason to want to pay ~$2000 more for the 2011 SM630, keeping in mind that I don't want/need the latest and greatest?
Q3: Any issues putting passenger pegs (I don't believe it has them stock) on the bike, or a luggage / pannier rack?
Q4: Anyone who thinks this would be a really bad bike for a beginner, please speak up (it was from this forum that I got the idea to start looking at the 600 Husky's as an alternative to the DRZ 400sm)...
Thanks for all input!
